From the Editor: The best from myWanderlust this week

Where has the English summer gone? MyWanderlust, that's where!

After the deluge that hit southern England last night, some of you maybe wondering just where the English summer has gone. Short answer? The myWanderlust photography section.

We put out the call last week for summer-themed photos and your responded. Thunderanga posted some shots from the beach at Treen. Carodragon shared her photos of the gorgeous meadows of Barcroft Hall. RoryMac has put up some bright flowers. Mcndesignphotos takes you to Malta. NickLedger takes you to Tulum. Austinmini takes you camping in Cornwall. Bolderplod transports us to Gambia.

Just go and have a look around. You'll automatically feel warmer, happier and more cheerful. What more could you ask for on a slow Friday afternoon?

Elsewhere the Wandering Welshman share his photos from visiting the gorillas in Bwindi.

I thoroughly enjoyed flicking through satkinson's pics of Bristol too. I've always had a lot of time for Bristol after spending a pleasant afternoon in a bar/cafe there called Start The Bus.

Actually after shaking a few branches on my family tree I found my affinity goes a bit deeper than that. My mother's side of the family originates from that neck of the woods. Mum's great, great grandfather was shipped out on a convict ship out of Bristol back in 1830.

There was a time Aussies wouldn't talk about that sort of thing but now it's kind of trendy to have a felon in the family. He got done for mugging some guy on Crow Lane. Just around the corner from Start the Bus, funnily enough.

Over at Experiences Mark Foe is on Day 4 of his climb of Mount Kenya. And Jill Cochrane walks along the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, by day, and declares it the world's best walk. Well, the best walk she's done anyway.

Andrew99 just got back from Rome. Had a brilliant time but issues a timely warning:  Don't use the tickets machines at the airport or Termini station. Scam artists work the machines to harvest your cash. Thanks for the tip Andrew.

Ehalford had a wander along the Jurassic Coast and suggests scuba diving off Swanage Pier. She was agog at how much marine life lives there. Barrow Lass just got back from a month in Myanamar, Northern Thailand and Laos. In a nutshell? Houseboat down Mekong River good. 13 hour train from Yangoon to Manadalay bad.

Finally, Louiseheal had a week in Barbados and recommends a visit to St Nicolas Abbey, the west coast beaches and a spot of cricket at Kensington Oval. Avoid the designer emporia. Travmaz went to Menorca and was impressed by the clear waters, whitewashed villages and regular buses. Not so impressed by the person who nicked his camera.

To the Forum, and MattyBoy876 wants to know if Algiers would make for a good weekend city break. I read AA Gill's account of his time in Algiers and it sounded great. Has anyone else been? Pop over and give MattyBoy876 a head's up.

On a more serious note, Sarah Manuel has been diagnosed with cancer and is looking for recommendations on companies offering insurance for people with longstanding conditions. Kallin is looking for suggestions on treks in Nepal in late September and Karl wants to know whether winter in Iceland is better done independently or on a tour.

Wanderlust Editor-in-Chief Lyn asks: Would you like to travel between London and Sydney in an hour? She feels that the culture shock and jetlag would be too immense. Plus she wouldn't get the chance to finish the new Jo Nesbo Scando-thriller.

Personally, I'm in two minds. I'd love to be able to pop back on a weekend to catch up with family, swim at a beach with sand an proper waves and have a decent Thai meal up on King Street in Newtown. But I suspect I'd have a load of mates turning up on my doorstep, looking for somewhere to doss when the next ashes series is played here. What do you think? If the technology advanced would you take advantage?

Let's mark a date in the diary for a myWanderlust catch up at the Lord Nelson in the Rocks in Sydney. Shall we say 7.30ish? About twenty years from today?
