The best from myWanderlust this week

Kavey is turning Japanese. I really think so

7 mins

Long time myWanderlust regular Kavey has been to Japan. You may recall she haunted the Forum for a while seeking out suggestions and tips. You guys must have supplied the goods (mooseontheloose, in particular) because she had a fantastic time. (And here are the pictures to prove it.) As I’ve always said – forget the guidebooks, ask someone from myWanderlust instead.

The Forum is awash again this week with people looking for advice, and like Kavey, hoping that you’ll give them a tip and a wink that will transform their journey. Elfy has just splashed out on a 100ml pressurised can of DEET and wants to know if she’ll be able to take it on the plane. Jill Frazier is spending New Year in Tallinn and is looking for ideas. AMHarris wants the lowdown on Guyana. And Liz Cleere is weighing up a ticket to India that’ll see her connecting in Jeddah. You can help them all here.

A number of philosophical debates are raging on the Forum too. Feel free to fan the flames or quell them. It’s up to you. Satkinson wonders whether you can own a view. Hmoat is pondering pubs with views. Dive in here.

Just Back From and we’ve got all corners of the globe covered. Stephen Bounds is back from Mongolia and Beijing, including a visit to Mao’s tomb where he had quite the chat with a faithful Maoist. (Make sure you check out his set of photos from the trip too.)

Howellsey went to Berlin and recommends eating in the restaurant on the top of the Reichstag building. Paul_M was pleasantly surprised with Bratislava and is planning to go back. (Always the highest recommendation for a place.) And AntCaston suggests getting to Burma before it turns into Thailand.

Elsewhere, Alan Taylor gets all poetic about the ‘radiant, turquoise mass’ of the Athabasca river in Canada, while Julia69 swoons over Jessica Lange’s cheekbones in Oaxaca, but reckons she takes a better photo.

Speaking of photos, congratulations are in order. myWanderlust uber-photographer Jamie Furlong took out the Guardian’s travel photo competition this month with this wonderful image. The theme was weather and the judge said: ‘I want to see more of this photographer’s work.’ Well, pop over to the myWanderlust photography section. The place is crawling with it.

Another one of our elite photographers, PeterJ2002, is back too with a selection of terrific wildlife photos from the Northern Pantanal. Hmoat 01’s set capturing Fife fishing villages is worth checking out too.

Sayonara. See you next week.
