Situated where River Nidelva and Trondheimsfjorden meet, Trondheim is a lively university town with rich medieval history. It was the first capital of Norway between 997 and 1380. After a fire in 1681, Trondheim was redesigned with wide streets and Renaissance flair by General Caspar Cicignon. Its landmark, the medieval Nidaros Domkirke is still the highest point in the city centre.
