This popular self-drive itinerary is a flexible, cost-effective way to discover Namibia. Namibian’s drive on the left-hand side and, although 80% of the country’s roads are gravel, regular grading generally keeps them in good condition. Visit the giant red sand dunes of Sossusvlei, the old German town of Swakopmund and impressive granite landscapes in Damaraland, where excursions include a wildlife drive in search of the elusive desert-dwelling elephants. Drive east to Etosha National Park which lends itself to self-drive safaris. The last night at Elegant Farmstead is a relaxed ending to the trip. This 2,800-hectare ranch has pretty gardens, good food and some interesting plains wildlife.
