Often spoken of as Germany’s most beautiful city, Dresden is rich in cultural and historic sights. The most famous of these is the Zwinger, the marvellous baroque palace which today houses various art galleries. One of Europe’s top galleries is prominent in the city, the Gemaldegalerie Alte Meister that has a lavish display of paintings by the old masters. Most of Dresden has been restored due to damage suffered in February 1945 when much of the city was destroyed. After a meticulous restoration programme lasting many years, the city has been returned to its past glory with new buildings such as the Frauenkirche Church.
