Explore western Iceland’s geographic wonders with an ultra-scenic 4WD road trip and stays in some of the country’s finest accommodation. Expect stilted spa masterpieces, restaurants with glacier views and contemporary gems with their very own geothermal hot springs. In between, you’ll take in everything from the Golden Circle’s iconic waterfalls to the remote Snaefellsnes Peninsula’s volcanoes and dramatic coastal beauty.
Days 1-2: UK/Golden Circle
Fly out to Keflavik, collect your 4WD hire car for the scenic drive along the coast and inland to one of Iceland’s finest spa properties. A jewel of modernist design, its floor-to-ceiling windows showcase both the Northern Lights and its rugged, lava-field setting. Then, over two memorable days, you’ll explore the iconic sights of the Golden Circle. Expect giant geysers, cascading waterfalls and volcanic crater lakes, along with Thingvellir National Park – a great rift valley home to the millennia-old ruins of the world’s first parliament.
Days 3-4: Husafell
Continue north, skipping over and along mighty fjords before turning into the remotes of West Iceland, perhaps stopping off at Borgarnes for one of its famous chocolate-covered cinnamon buns. You’ll arrive at your unique accommodation, home to its very own geothermal baths, along with ultra-contemporary rooms and a superb pair of restaurants. There’s also plenty to enjoy nearby, including the likes of the lava-waterfall complex at Hraunfossar and wellness-mecca Deildartunguhver – the world’s most powerful hot springs. There’s also a full range of optional excursions, from summer snowmobiling and glacier tours to horseback rides and numerous hiking trails in the wild Iceland countryside.
Days 5-6: Snaefellsnes
Crossing fjord bridges and tracing Iceland’s spectacularly cragged coast, take in the spectacular Gerduberg Cliffs and pause for a walk around the crater of the Eldborg volcano. All this majestic scenery will see you to the beautifully remote Budir Hotel, its delightful rooms and gourmet restaurant offering gorgeous views over the glacier-topped Snæfellsjökull volcano. You’ll then have a free day to explore, with everything from glacier hikes and horse rides to whale-watching cruises and fat-bike volcano rides. There are also black-sand beaches, caves home to 8,000-year-old lava tubes and ferries to island villages. Arnarstapi’s wild rock formations also impress with giant colonies of seabirds.
