Carlotta Maitland-Smith

Carlotta was born in London in 1974 to Italian and British parents and was brought up primarily in France. She studied photography at both SPEOS (Paris International Photographic Institute) and ICP (International Centre of Photography, New York), and has a joint-honours degree in languages from University College London. She is now a freelance photographer based in Europe, specializing in documentary and environmental portraiture and has had several solo exhibitions - in London, Paris and Italy.

With a quenchless curiosity to learn about people from other backgrounds and walks of life, Carlotta has travelled extensively, living with and photographing several communities around the world. These include Aboriginal communities in Australia, the Himba, Herero and San villages of Namibia, the Bakonzo tribe of the Mountains of the Moon in Uganda, and the Italian Americans of the Bronx (Time Magazine gallery). She finds living with and learning from peoples from very different backgrounds to herself to be her main drive and inspiration.
