The best from myWanderlust this week

Who would be your ideal cabin crew?

5 mins

Susiezoo kindly drew our attention to a recent survey that asked people to name their dream stewards and pilots. A little nonplussed by the results – Marilyn Monroe heading up the cabin crew? Really? – Susiezoo took to the Forum for your suggestions. It seems Morgan Freeman has a gig flying planes should he ever quit acting. Although Denzel Washington did get an honourable mention for being able to fly a plane upside down while drunk.

Rosemarie John’s blog about how the 60s inspired her to travel inspired a similar themed post in the Forum. Most admitted that it was particular books that got them interested in travelling, though Ocelus admit that the Art Deco posters of the 1920s got his wanderlust stirring. Scheungy bravely admitted that it was the rise of budget airlines that saw them venture into the world with a few pounds in their pocket. I suspect the era of £1 flights will be looked upon as some kind of golden period in decades to come.

Before you leave the Forum, make sure you help markymark983 choose an Italian lake to visit and KayTro pick a worthy project in Africa to volunteer on. And if you know any decent organised tours to Dia de los Muertos or the ins and outs of walking the Camino de Santiago, make sure you let Polly Allen and scheungy, respectively, know.

Pollyiew is just back from Cuba raving about the buzz of walking around Havana. Alan Taylor has returned from Norway with a new-found awe of the defining properties of water. And pdenooljer is considering therapy after watching his friend getting bitten by a monkey in Thailand. Spare a thought for the friend – he’s worried he’s got rabies.

KeithRuffles has a sobering tale about animal cruelty in Russia over on Experiences. It’s something many of us witness in our travels and the danger is we can become immune to it. Keith’s piece is a stark reminder that we shouldn’t.

Also on Experiences, the ever-reliable DavidRoss entertains with a tale of a road trip to Istanbul in the early 90s. I was in Istanbul about the same time, and actually succumbed to the siren call of the departure board at Haydarpasa station. If it’s any consolation, David, Erzerum was a shit-hole.

Our photography section seems to have succumbed to the call of the wild this week. Peterj2002 has posted a set of dazzling photos of Trinidad’s birdlife. And HPerryP2 has stuck up a picture of a polar bear and a turtle. Scheungy provides the pandas (and some pics from the Chengdu Opera), while FarawayVisions taunts with a set of images from the Argentario Classic Yacht Regatta.

Finally, Treacleminer reminds us that adventure is never far away with a set of pictures from just up the road.
