Trinidad and Tobago

Trinidad and Tobago travel guide

You get two for the price of one with this stunning Caribbean couple. Although each island has its own unique identity, both have been gifted with beautiful beaches and cheery locals

Trinidad and Tobago is a dual island Caribbean country off South America with two very distinct identities. Bustling Trinidad is the business hub with an eclectic heritage (its people hail from African, Indian, Chinese, Arabic and European descent), a legendary carnival and a work hard, play hard philosophy. Laid back Tobago’s raison d’être is the pursuit of pleasure – if archetypal Caribbean beaches are what you’re after, this is the place to be.

Unlike heterogeneous Trinidad, its residents are mainly of African descent and the restaurant and club scene is a little less varied for it. Western Tobago is clogged up with resorts and but you can still find a slice of solitude outside the developed areas. While each island retains its own flavour, both offer the Caribbean trademarks – fields of sugar cane, waterfall hikes, rum cocktails, music and incredible beaches.

Wanderlust recommends

  1. Shake your booty at Trinidad’s world famous carnival. The riotous event with its flamboyant costumes, calypso tents and all night dancing requires stamina but is well worth the effort. If you miss out, you can still enjoy a dose of exuberant Caribbean rhythms; take in soca, calypso, parang or steel pan music.
  2. Swim with barracudas and manta rays on a diving trip. Head to Buccoo Reef where you can make a leisurely pit stop at a floating bar to sip cocktails while waist deep in warm sea water.
  3. Train your eyes on some of the most impressive birdlife in the Caribbean. Spot hundreds of species at the Asa Wright Nature Centre or take a boat trip to the Caroni Swamp where you can see the evening flight of scarlet ibis.
  4. Go hiking or biking in Trinidad’s Northern Range, a mountainous stretch with coastal views, waterfalls and copious flora and fauna.
  5. Hire a kayak and glide to some of Tobago’s hidden coves.
