Alvor, Portugal

How long were you there for?
1 week

What was the single highlight of your trip?
Discovering the best sardine restaurant in the little village port. making sure we got there when they came off the boats at 4pm, and washing them down with a jug of white Sangria.

Any lowlights/cautionary tales?
Spending too long walking through a building site in Portimao after taking a wrong turn to find the car rental shop. Portimao in general wasn't as nice as we had expected, more Brits abroad tourist town than we had anticipated.

Any absolutely MUST see sights/activities?
Making the drive West to Sagres. The coves surrounding Alvor and Lagos are beyond stunning with their pinch-me-they're-so-blue waters and enveloping rock formations, but to experience the vast expance of the Atlantic from the Sagres clifftops before scrambling down them is breathtaking

Any absolutely DON'T see sights/activities?
I would'nt recommend Portimao, the beaches nearer to Alvor are much prettier

If you could give one piece of advice, what would it be?
Prepare for the water to be cold. And, if you decide to take a clifftop walk, keep to the path. Avoiding it means an afternoon spent tree-hugging to avoid falling to your death at the feet of a hairy nudist.

Any other comments?
This was as much of food experience as a beach break so I would recommend trying Portuguese sausage (flame-cooked at your table), Pastis de nata for breakfast and the Pizza restaurant in the old part of Alvor, washed down with a few Caiprinha's in in the Bolan Reggae bar
