Aragon, Spain

How long were you there for?
6 days

What was the single highlight of your trip?
Sipping a red Bitter-Kas (lemonade with bitter) at the foot of Monte Perdido at the end of the Valley of Pineta. This wide circus offers sublime views of several impressive waterfalls ending in a calm water stream. Eco trails are available for the braves who want to see them from closer.

Any lowlights/cautionary tales?
Unless you are planning on partying all night, absolutely avoid booking a room in a street with bars. Locals tend to share their love of life rather loudly through songs and animated (or shall I say drunken?) conversations outside bars from 1am till dawn…

Any absolutely MUST see sights/activities?
Riglos is dominated by steep red rocks called ‘Mallos’. Heaven to expert climbers with its 300m vertical drop. At the Centre for the interpretation of birds, watch vultures in their habitat with a camera that you can operate yourself! In Huesca, take a peek in the Casino, emblem of modernism.

Any absolutely DON'T see sights/activities?
Not that I am aware of! You won’t meet hordes of tourists and the locals are very amenable although they don’t speak much English so you’ll have plenty of opportunities to practice your Spanish!

If you could give one piece of advice, what would it be?
Try to catch the locals’ habits to avoid the inconvenience of extreme heat. Lunch is taken at 3pm and the streets are pretty empty until 5pm. Drink ‘vino de verano’ (red wine with soda) or ‘caña con limon’ (beer with lemonade).

Any other comments?
Even in July the temperature in the mountains drops dramatically at night so adequate clothing is required. Shops are generally closed from 2 to 5pm for the siesta time!

Your highlight does sound like my sort of highlight too.... I had to google Aragon to check out the location, and wish I'd seen your posting before my recent road trip past there! Never mind.... perfect excuse to go back! Hope you'll post some pics?

Cheers for the info and welcome to MyW, DrG
