Boat ride at dawn

Stay away from stoned babas after the evening prayer at the Ganges

Any absolutely MUST see sights/activities?
The Bathing Ghats in the morning - Ahilya Ghat being my favorite

Any absolutely DON'T see sights/activities?
Don't bathe in the holy river alongside plastic and bones

If you could give one piece of advice, what would it be?
Carry food stuff to avoid local delicacies

    Ooh, two years in India and we still haven't been to Varanasi (it's the thought of all those crowds, and that whole 'spirituality' side of it just doesn't appeal). I hope we get there before we leave though.

    Nothing spiritual about seeing a dead body being tugged and gnawed at by a dog at the side of the river (my dawn experience in Varanasi over 20 years ago). I was very glad to leave India after that!

    Maybe I should give the place the benefit of the doubt and return one day...
