Riga, Latvia

How long were you there for?
4 days

What was the single highlight of your trip?
The Art Nouveau quarter lives up to its billing - don't rush it!

Any lowlights/cautionary tales?
We found Riga to be safe and we did not feel threatened in any way. The taxi drivers at the airport were very pushy while we were waiting for the hotel shuttle bus, which stops near the taxi rank.

Any absolutely MUST see sights/activities?
Art nouveau quarter, Museum of the Occupations- and don't forget the black cat statue - purrfect!!

Any absolutely DON'T see sights/activities?
Not really, but the Open-air Museum is a bit of a trek and we found almost all the exhibits closed. Also the snow and ice had not been cleared from several of the paths, including the main one into the mmuseum!

If you could give one piece of advice, what would it be?
Alus Sete in the Old Town is an excellent bar/ café - a good range of food and beer, and cheap to boot!

Any other comments?
The Lutheran Cathedral is currently having its roof renovated, which spoils the view and restricts your movements inside. We preferred the Russian Orthodox Cathedral - a stunning building and free, unlike its Lutheran counterpart, which costs 2 Lati.

Ah Yes. The Art Nouveau buildings in Riga are a sight to behold. I only got to see those in the city centre - and that was Art Nouveau heaven. But I understand that there are even better things to see on Elizabetes iela. I never managed to get there during my brief 2 day stop in the city  - I was on a hostelling trip with my sons at the time - but I want to go back one day specifically to explore Riga's Art Nouveau architecture.

I must give Riga a second chance. I was there about 6 years ago and found it to be pretty seedy. Lots of prostitution and lapdancing clubs. But maybe my hotel was in the wrong side of town :-/
