Kiev

How long were you there for?
4 days

What was the single highlight of your trip?
The trip to Chernobyl, an extroadinary experience wandering around one of the most polluted and eerie places in the world.

Any lowlights/cautionary tales?
If you find yourself in a bar with a group of Ukranians close by, and they have bottles of vodka on their table....try to avoid contact...otherwise...your night will turn into a smoky haze of endless "Na zdorovie!!!!"...and you will wander how on earth you got home and wake up in your hallway.

Any absolutely MUST see sights/activities?
Saint Sophia is a world heritage sight and is very nice to see.

Any absolutely DON'T see sights/activities?
Don't be afraid by the scare stories abounding about Ukraine, it's a wonderful country with very friendly people.

If you could give one piece of advice, what would it be?
Experience the metro, incredibly deep escalators, we were getting vertigo going down them they are so steep.

Any other comments?
Try the Puzata hata places for cheap, good, ukranian food, Kiev can be done very cheaply, or very expensively also.

At least you made it to the hallway, haha!

My brother's married to a (very beautiful) Ukranian and has similar stories to tell about the effects of the vodka there. I've never been. Which is a shame because I love good vodka.

The trip sounds pretty action packed, and full of contrasts, just what I always look for when I travel.

Did you try the chicken? ;-)

We've been seeing a lot in the news this week about racism in Ukraine in the run-up to the footy Euro champs. Did you get an impression of ultra-right politics or simmering nationalism ready to explode in the city, Matt?

Absolutely not pluck, everyone was really friendly, saw quite a few mixed races about in the city, no one seemed to be hiding in terror...I think it's a lot of scaremongering by people who haven't been to Ukraine before. I didn't see a single skinhead/right winger type...no nazi grafitti...nothing..they obviously have some problems there, not saying it doesn't exist....but I think it's been blown out of all proportions by the media.

I did try the chicken Liz, it was ok...actually it was great to try all sorts of cuisines that aren't so easy to get here, like Georgian, Ukrainian & Central asian.

Great to try central Asian cuisine?  As far as I recall Uzbekistan every meal consists of some variant on fatty mutton stew.  What have I missed?

That apart, Ukraine sounds great.  It is reaching the top of my wish list and you have just kicked it up a notch or two.

Agreed about the people, I found them to be very friendly too, even at the football matches! What's being reported in the papers at the moment strikes me as scaremongering.
