Walking in Andalucia

How long were you there for?
8 days based in Canillas de Albaida, a hilltop village on the edge of the Sierra Tejeda Natural Park, nestling at altitude 600m approx. between the Sierra Tejeda and Sierra Almijara mountain ranges. Peaks are equivalent to Snowdon and Ben Nevis. Highest peak is Mt. Lucero (1779m).

What was the single highlight of your trip?
Being in sleepy Canillas, pop. 700m approx, quiet except for church bells at 8am, and women coming back with bread and chatting at the fountain under my balcony, traffic free centre, great sunsets and warmth and 6-8hrs. sunshine in January.

Any lowlights/cautionary tales?
Not really ... well, go easy on the Rioja, which is cheap but good, if you're walking the following day. And stay away from the bodegas at lunchtime, or the return walk might be a stagger.

Any absolutely MUST see sights/activities?
Walking along the various mountain trails gives plenty of views of white-washed hilltop villages and takes you off the beaten track.

Any absolutely DON'T see sights/activities?
Not really ... January is off season, so few tourists around.

If you could give one piece of advice, what would it be?
Take good walking kit and head for the hills. Some steep ascents and descents in places but doable if you're reasonably fit. Mt. Lucero at 1779m is a serious day's hike. Fleece and shirt is OK at lower altitudes, but hat gloves, the works when higher as it's cold when the mist comes down.

Any other comments?
I did this trip last minute with Explore (Moorish Trails) but it can be done independently. A visit during the San Anton Festival is great for an experience of Spanish customs. A side trip to the Alhambra in Granada is well worth it the 2 hour drive. Food is big - fish and meat -not much veg.

Hi Jon, it was idyllic, but probably because there were few people ... I mean tourists ... about, and the weather was just right.  Summer is hell-hot so you may wish to rethink.  Granada is cooler but crowded.  Jan-Feb is best time for me.  I have a contact in Canillas de Albaida so I can put you in touch with her when you're ready - she is a lovely Irish lass who was our walks leader.  Jean (:D

Jean, thanks for the tips re Granada. I spent all weekend trying to book tickets for the Alhambra Palace, the website kept timing out I've booked them now went through sweet as a nut tonight. I'm staying in the centre of town about 5 mins walk from the cathedral so will avail myself of the free tapas.

Your walking trip sounds fab. Cheers Kev

Hi Ocelus, don't forget to take the Alhambra confirmation with you to prove your booking - the officials will refuse you entry if you don't have it. I look forward to hearing what you think about the Alhambra.

Tapas ... the friend (Spanish) I was with says that what you do is order a drink, get your free tapas, head on to the next, order a drink, get a free tapas ...  Apparently, this only happens in Granada!

If you're into Laurie Lee, take a look at 'A Rose for Winter' which chronicles Lee's return to Spain many years after the Civil War, and has a very lyrical chapter about Granada.  Have fun.  Jean

I'm a huge fan of Andalucia generally and Los Alpujjaras specifically with a dash of Granada thrown in for flavour.  We used to visit every January, just to get away for some winter sun and were never disappointed.  Well, if you dont count the year we got snowed off on a trip to Granada and when we tried again the following day, the snow on either side of the now cleared roads was over 8 feet deep!!!!!  Stunning!!!!

Pam - thanks.  From the little I've seen of Andalucia, it is a real gem and I shall certainly be going back.  :-) Jean
