The world according to HMJ
Mountain/Desert/Ocean/Jungle... which one are you?
It used to be mountain until I became too old to ski! Now it would have to be something more sedate like the ocean.
What was your first great travel experience?
Visiting Luxor in Egypt in 1993. We booked seven nights for £199 with a free week thrown in. It was meant to be a relaxing holiday but we were so inspired, we spent a fortune on trips!
What has been your favourite journey?
It has to be spending New Year's eve on a converted rice barge on the Keralan backwaters. Just the two of us and three staff to attend to our every need - absolute bliss.
What are your Top 5 places worldwide?
South Africa, Zambia or any other African country where I can safari in style), Thailand, China and nearer to home, Austria.
Recommend a special place to stay
We celebrated my partner's 50th birthday in the Ice Hotel in Swedish Lapland. It was incredibly different but not the sort of thing you'd do twice! That's what makes it so special.
Which three items do you always pack?
My travel writing journal, camera and my bunnie rabbit, Peter. The only time he's not been with me on holiday was when the flight restrictions meant you couldn't take on hand luggage. I wouldn't risk him in the hold and so he had to stay at home instead of visiting Lithuania.
Which passport stamp are you proudest of?
Lebanon - we visited in 2005 just after the ex Prime Minister was assassinated and friends thought we were mad. Whilst we were there bombs went off in Central London near to where we work. It is such a diverse country we'd love to re-visit.
Which passport stamp would you most like to have?
Anywhere is South America as to date we've only been to Bolivia. The thought of wine tasting in Chile or Argentina has a certain appeal.
Where or what is your guilty travel pleasure?
Staying in a luxury tent on a small safari camp and being totally waited on hand and foot.
