The sweetwater walk is a 4.5 klick tramp through dry bush just north of Katherine. Plenty of birds around but few animals, even the reptiles were scarce. However, the pure and saltie free waters, and stunning views beneath a huge sky studded with pancake clouds made up for it. We never saw a soul!

Another incredible photo DrG, looks idylic. Are there more trails to walk in the area.
2nd August by DrG
Hi K! Thanks for that. There are plenty more walks in the area but most are around the main part of Nitmiluk (Katherine Gorge) NP. There is a reasonable description of them here. Most require some input from the walker, ie time and the willingness to carry camping gear to get away from the madding crowds. We were there after the second wettest summer on record so the gorge was not open to canoeing (mid May). It did mean that the upper channels had plenty of water in them for washing away the weariness of the trail, and this area in particular doen't even have freshwater crocs let alone salties. The sweetwater trail leaves from Leliyn (Edith Falls) carpark and hence is the end of the Jatbula trail mentioned in the link above... something I wanted to do but MrsG was not so keen in the heat understandably! A stunning area if you like NT dry bush interspersed with ribbons of green. Cheers, J

A jaunt in August would be good. Would make a good change from summer cleaning the house!!! Can get the bus at the end of the road to Lewisham and get on the DLR, won't cost a penny with the OAP travel card! E mail me on neferangela@btinternet.com and we can make arrangements.

Thanks for your reply above it's really helpful, I'll have a look at the weblink tomorrow. A while back Pam posed a question of where don't you want to go, one of the places I haven't been to and wasn't keen on visiting was Aus, however having looked at your photos of Top End, Otway and Taz has changed my perspective, certainly trekking here far from the madding crowd sounds great and the landscape looks fantastic too. Mind you I do like a bit of solitude, it gives me time to reflect and sort my life out, I can sit for hours at the top of a mountain watching what's happening far away below me deep in thought.... ....drifted off a bit there thinking about trekking in Nitmiluk, I might never get there but I've enjoyed it today. Cheers Kev

Another beauty. Many mozzies present Doc? I'm usually breakfast, lunch and dinner for mozzies - which puts me off visiting the Top End - but it is sooo pretty.

Beautiful! Is this another of your stitched together shots or is this an all-in-one? Its funny that Kev raised the issue of not wanting to go to Oz, it has always been high on my list of places to avoid but your pictures are so deeply beautiful and evocative, there is a risk that terminally intrasigent of plymouth may have a bit of a rethink.... who knew that could occur? xp

VE10 YLW. No, not me, but I'd love to know who! Talking congestion on the M6, After a very wet camping trip in Northern Brittany, I'm thinking of buying a touring caravan, now that will make me popular.

Hi, Dr G. Yes the food and wine in the Picos were pretty good, especially liked the cheeses. We'd just booked a Brittany ferries package, ferry from Portsmouth to Santander with an appartment just outside Potes. Planned our own walks using the Cicerone guide book. Thought I might get bored on the ferry, it's a 24 hour crossing, but found it fine. Thinking of a birding trip to Trinidad and Tobago for February, but in the meantime, I'd better get back in the lab!

DrG, I added a shot taken from the Buzzards View, I stitched three shots together. Kev
