Driving and camping around Italy
How long were you there for?Two weeks in total, 10 days driving around the north and 4 days in Venice
What was the single highlight of your trip? Its a tie, either renting bikes in Lucca and riding around the city walls, or walking around the Libreria Acqua Alta bookshop in the backstreets of Venice.
Any lowlights/cautionary tales? When it comes to driving Italy lives upto its reputation; in two weeks we crashed three times. If you do choose to rent a car get a GPS, make sure you arrange comprehensive motor insurance and if you're ever unsure who has right of way, its you!
Any absolutely MUST see sights/activities?Lacona, on Elba Island. It’s a 40 minute ferry from the mainland and has soft, warm sand with a fantastic restaurant right on the beach front. If your into water sports this is the place for you, or there a number of Napoleon related sites to visit on the other side of the island.
Any absolutely DON'T see sights/activities?With the exception of Elba island, I wouldnt recomend swimming in the lakes or the sea. They are not the most hygienic!
If you could give one piece of advice, what would it be?If your going camping stock up on food essentials at supermarkets, you will pay more for the basics at campsites. If your driving make sure you take a GPS, it will save you hours of misdirection and show you routes that avoid the toll roads.
Any other comments?Take antihistamine cream if you attract mosquitoes and are camping near the lakes or the beach, and pick up a camping guide as they offer 10% discounts on sites around the country.
