Thailand Visa Query

Hi Guys,

I am currently planning a trip to southeast asia and I have recently been looking into the Visa's I will need.

At one point of my trip I will be travelling through Malaysia and into Thailand overland. Now I am aware of the 15 day rule for overland travel and I am planning to be in Thailand for longer than that.

My plan is to buy a tourist Thai Visa in KL Malaysia from the Thai Embassy. If I do this how long do I have before I have to enter Thailand? After KL I was planning on seeing the area around Penang and Georgetown before moving onto Thailand so if I have to enter Thailand as soon as I have bought my Visa I will have to change my plans.
