    Safe to travel to Egypt?

I am considering a trip to Egypt over Easter next year - now that the political situation has calmed down a bit, and perhaps before the mass crowds return as I have wanted to see the classical sites for ages. Has anyone been there recently and does anyone have any advice?

I wouldn't book it this far in advance - who knows what the situation will be in 9 months' time. I'm sure it'll be pretty easy to visit last-minute, as so many people will have been put off visiting as a result of the instability.

I would imagine it's quite safe, but yes 9 months time is a long way off. I read that tourism is down by 30%....so there are still a lot of tourists going there obviously.

We will be in Cairo for a long weekend in September, normally if I'm in an area that has potential to be a bit hairy...I just keep an eye on the news over the weeks before I get there...and if necessary I adjust my travel plans..so for example, I may stay away from Tahir square if there had been a fair bit of trouble recently.

Otherwise, I'd say it's an interesting time to go there.

Several of my friends at my egyptology society have visited Egypt over the March - May period this year and they say that the people are just so pleased to see tourists and it is all very safe.  However, nine months hence who knows, my feeling is from what I have heard from my various contacts and their contacts in Egypt that the situation will continue to improve as the new president finds his feet.  I would have no hesitation in spending a week or so in Luxor at present if I had the time left from my leave allowance as it is a really good time to see everything with no crowds.  You will probably get a decent deal closer to the time you want to travel.

Friend of mine rents out  Flats in Luxor She reckons that It's safe as long as you don't head for the known trouble spots, but the country is suffering because people are being scared off by the press reports. She's from the UK but has lived in Egypt for a number of years. You could try getting in touch with her via the website if the Luxor area interests you.

My friends stay at the flats mentioned.  They are apparently very good, very reasonable and the owner looks after you well. It where we intend to stay next time we visit.

comments from friend in Cairo - come back tourists we need you!
She also said that she can understand concern and may be wise to wait before booking - the Egyptians themselves are a bit unsure about planning too far in advance
