For anyone looking to get a feel for the Balkans by bike, your time has come to start pedalling.

The Serbian section of the Trans Dinarica Cycle Route is now complete with the route connecting eight Balkan nations, passing through Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Albania, North Macedonia, Kosovo and Serbia.

The route begins near the northern Serbian town of Tutin and then makes its way through the mountainous, and very picturesque, Sandžak Region. It then heads northwest and passes through UNESCO-recognised and protected areas including Tara National Park, which is on the border with Bosnia & Herzegovina.

From Tutin, the Serbian section of the Trans Dinarica continues to the historic town of Novi Pazar before heading northwest to the small town of Sjenica and the Uvac Special Nature Reserve, full of clear river waters and soaring limestone canyons. The trail then heads to the calm mountain town of Zlatibor and Emir Kusturica’s pretty, ethno-village, “Drvengrad” in the Dinaric Alps. The Serbian section of the Trans Dinarica ends on the banks of the Drina River in the town of Bajina Bašta.

The Serbian section of the Trans Dinarica Cycle Route is nearly 350 kilometres long and is broken up into 50km daily sections, with a place to stay indicated at the end of each day’s ride. It’s the perfect way to see the Balkans at a slower pace and take in the region’s natural beauty, from UNESCO sites to deep forests, clear lakes and welcoming villages.

It’s the first and only cycle route to connect all eight countries in the Western Balkans so whether you’re a seasoned cyclist or relatively new to visiting a country by bike, it’s worth considering at least part of the Trans Dinarica Cycle Route for a future trip.
