I bagged a free trip to Cuba – and a fiancé!

Once Wanderlust reader Rachel Newton got over the shock of winning a trip to Cuba, she packed her bags for a life-changing week

Client manager Rachel Newton and London barrister Richard Munden had been together for 10 years when they packed their bags for Cuba – and it turned out to be no ordinary journey! Here’s how Rachel describes the experience:

"I’ve been meaning to go to Cuba for years...

As a complete travel addict I’ve never wanted to win anything other than a free trip. When Wanderlust phoned, I couldn’t believe it and thought it must be a scam. But lo and behold, we ended up spending a life-changing week in Cuba.

As backpackers, the trip was a true taste of luxury. We were greeted with champagne on arrival and our accommodation was stunning. There were two beaches attached and Enfenachos, the quieter of the two, was gorgeous.

Havana was really interesting and full of happy people. Unlike our usual trips, we had lots of snooze time – it was refreshing to have nothing to do but eat, swim and read a good book.

Richard asked me to marry him halfway through the trip. He had always said he’d propose with a ring and I knew he hadn’t had time to go shopping, so I didn’t expect a thing.

He contemplated popping the question as we were lazing around in the warm sea just as I was stung by a jellyfish, and had to leap out of the water and had to have an antihistamine injection.

Undeterred, he tried again. We were lazing around on the perfect Caribbean beach when he drew a ring in the sand and got down on one knee. I thought it was a joke.

I said yes and we’re now back in the UK planning our wedding. I’ve entered all the Wanderlust competition in the hope of winning a honeymoon too!
