Trip reference number: Adventure on Ancient Trails
Trip Operator: Selective Asia
What better way to explore a country than through a combination of both its landscapes and cityscapes. This trip is designed not only for the adventurous but also for the traveller who likes to include an element of gentle activity while on holiday. Arriving in the pulsating metropolis of Tokyo your first full day will be spent exploring the city with your guide on foot. After a fast-paced street food tour you will leave Tokyo for the Japanese Alps where you’ll spend two days exploring the spectacular mountain scenery of Kamikochi.
Heading south to Kiso-Fukushima you’ll enjoy a gentle walk along your first pilgrimage trail of this trip, the Nakasendo Way set deep in the Kiso Valley before continuing on your journey through the mountains by train to Takayama, high in the Japanese Alps and home to one of our favourite Japanese ingredients – Hida beef (lesser known than Kobe beef, but equally delicious!) You’ll sample this and many other local dishes on your food tour before burning off some of those calories on a cycle trip around the small neighbouring town of Hida-Furukawa.
Onwards for 3 nights in the cultural capital of Kyoto where you’ll explore the city on two wheels before heading to the nearby UNESCO wetland site of Lake Biwa, Japan’s largest freshwater lake. Your trip crescendos as you embark upon the journey to the Kumano Kodo region situated in the Kii Mountain Range on the southern peninsula of Honshu, that has drawn pilgrims for over a thousand years. The spectacular pilgrimage routes are footpaths that wind along the coast through the forested mountains, connecting sacred sites. Spend three days exploring the shrines, trails and onsens before concluding this brilliant trip in what we would arguably call the foodie capital of Japan, Osaka.
