This year marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of one of the world's most iconic figures: Nelson Mandela. South Africa is a destination close to our hearts at Rainbow Tours; in fact, the ‘Rainbow Nation' was the inspiration for our name, and was the first destination we offered when we first began creating responsible holidays over 20 years ago.
To mark this occasion, we've put together a limited-edition tour to South Africa, carefully designed to follow in Mandela's footsteps and offer travellers a chance to understand his journey from prisoner to President. Explore Robben island, tour the historic and cultural heart of Cape Town, and travel aboard the iconic luxury Rovos Rail to reach Johannesburg and explore the Sowento (derived from 'South West Township') region.
Day 1 Depart this evening on your overnight flight to Cape Town.
Day 2 On arrival in the morning, you will be met and transferred to your hotel, The Cape Grace, where you will spend the next three nights with breakfast included. The Cape Grace is perfectly situated on the Victoria And Alfred waterfront - one of the most sought-after neighbourhoods of the city. Take advantage of your time on the waterfront to dine in the excellent array of restaurants nearby.
Day 3 Today you will be collected from your hotel for this day tour to discover the Legacy of Nelson Mandela. Cape Town has more than just Robben Island - Cape Town tells the story of the secretive meetings that were held and that led to the surprise release of Mandela and the unbanning of the ANC.
Day 4 A trip to Cape Town is not complete without a trip up to the top of Table mountain to see the amazing scenery beyond and of course a ferry across to Robben Island to hear the history and stories behind the prisoner.
Day 5 Today you will be transferred to Cape Town station where you will board the luxurious train and spend the next 2 nights here. All meals and local drinks are included on your journey. See some amazing scenery from the viewing deck whilst experiencing luxury from a bygone era.
Day 6 During breakfast on this day you will wind through the country side, watching the scenery go past. Lunch is served in the dining car before stopping in Kimberly, the diamond mining city of South Africa. Here you will visit the city, the Diamond Museum as well as the big hole.
Day 7 Once the train arrives into Pretoria station, you will be collected and transferred to your hotel, the Saxon, for the next 2 nights with breakfast included. Situated in the heart of the suburbs, you will be perfectly situated to take in the sights and sounds of Johannesburg.
Day 8 Today you will be taken on your tour of Soweto. A well-known township in Johannesburg, formed after legislation in 1904 removed coloured people from the city centre, and also where Nelson Mandela lived. You can stop here at one of the local restaurants and try some of the local cuisine before continuing on to the Apartheid Museum. This museum tells a fascinating story about the history of South Africa.
Day 9 This evening you will be transferred back to the airport for your flight back to London.
