Seeing the Northern Lights is, for many, a true bucket list experience. And there are few better places on earth to see their kaleidoscopic displays than Norway's Arctic capital – Tromso. The aurora is at its most active from late autumn, through winter and into early spring, and can generally be seen best between 6pm and 2am, weather permitting, of course. Our popular short break, featured below, includes an aurora safari to a remote camp, giving you a true taste of life in the Arctic. What's more, there's the chance to add on any number of optional excursions, which include everything from cultural tours and snowmobiling safaris to Ice Dome visits and Northern Lights harbour cruises. Speak to our specialists for all the options available.
Day 1: UK/Tromso
Fly from London Gatwick to Tromso and take an included shuttle transfer to the city centre. You'll then check in to the Clarion Collection Hotel With, located near the city's harbour. It's the perfect base for exploring Norway's 'Arctic capital' a city know not only for its wintery adventure and Northern Lights displays, but also for its outstanding food and nighttime entertainment – Tromso is home to more pubs per capita than any other city in Norway. This evening, you'll enjoy a complimentary light evening meal, served between 6pm and 9pm each day.
Days 2-3: Tromso: optional excursions & included Northern Lights tour
Over two days, you'll have the chance to head out of the city on a range of optional excursions, taking you between snow-capped peaks and plunging fjords on everything from snowmobiles and husky sleds to harbour cruises in search of whales. And, on one evening, you'll head out on an included aurora safari to one of four base stations to view the Northern Lights. Your guide will select the station based on weather and wind forecasting, based on more than 15 years of Northern Lights-hunting experience. Once there, you’ll hunker down by a roaring fire with hot drinks and snacks as a local host shares stories of the region's unique culture and history.
Day 4: Optional excursions & depart for UK
With an evening flight home, you'll have time for one more optional excursion. So why not end your stay in style, with a thrilling husky safari deep into the Troms countryside? With winter clothes and full instruction included, you'll ride two to a sled, swapping half way to take turns mushing your team of eager dogs. It's a wonderfully evocative way to explore Northern Norway's frozen Arctic landscapes. Finally, at the end of a breathless day, it's time for your shuttle transfer to the airport and your flight home.
