Holiday overview

The province of Newfoundland & Labrador in Atlantic Canada is home to some of the country's most fascinating cultures and traditions, and you’ll have the chance to experience them on this tailor-made road trip. From St. John's – North America's oldest city – you’ll head for Trinity, following a scenic coastal drive along Conception Bay. After a whale watching tour, visit Terra Nova National Park at the foot of the ancient Appalachian Mountains. Then, experience the striking architecture of much-lauded Fogo Island Inn, where you’ll enjoy some very local experiences. Finish with a stay in Gros Morne National Park and an overnight stop at a restored Light Keepers residence on Quirpon Island, from where you’ll watch icebergs on their slow journey south.

Holiday itinerary

Days 1-2: UK / St. John's

Relax with included airport lounge access before your flight to St. John’s. This historic and vibrant city has many attractions along with a superb array of restaurants offering everything from fine dining to traditional Newfoundland fare. The city also has the highest concentration of pubs per capita on the continent, which you'll be free to visit between trips out to explore the Irish Loop, a scenic drive around the Avalon Peninsula, a spectacular location for a lighthouse picnic before you head on to pretty Bay Bulls. You might also choose to take a cruise out around the Witless Bay Ecological Reserve to see kittiwakes, murres, puffins and the world’s largest concentration of humpback whales.

Stay: Leaside Manor Inn (Superior)

Days 3-4: Trinity

Heading out along the shores of Conception Bay, you'll reach the village of Brigus - residence of 19th-century explorer Captain Bob Bartlett. Then, driving via the wonderfully named Heart's Content and Heart's Delight, you'll arrive into Trinity for an included whale watching cruise before visiting Cape Bonavista Lighthouse, Historic Ryan Premises, Mockbeggar Plantation and the Matthew Legacy Interpretation Centre – a full-scale replica of explorer Jon Cabot's 15th century caravel.

Day 5: Twillingate

Depart Trinity for the Terra Nova National Park. Here, rocky headlands provide shelter from the mighty power of the Atlantic as rugged cliffs, sheltered inlets and rolling hills provide a pristine habitat for ospreys, eagle, lynx and moose. The coastline is dotted with tiny coves and fishing villages, which you'll pass as you head for the seaside community of Twillingate.

Stay: Captain's Legacy B&B (Superior)

Days 6-7: Fogo Island

There's time this morning to explore Twillingate further before heading to Farewell for the afternoon ferry to Fogo Island. Your base for the next couple of nights – Fogo Island Inn – offers a full spread of authentic experiences, including an included Island Orientation tour, led by a local community host. The remainder of your time on Fogo is yours to do as you please. Perhaps explore the Island further on range of adventures designed to celebrate the island's 'seven seasons'; in winter there's cross-country skiing and ice skating, in autumn there's berry picking and bonfire nights while in spring and summer, ocean swimming, musical events and nature cruises are among the choices. Or, you might simply wish to relax amid the Inn's striking architecture, where suites look out to the ocean and the dining is local and delicious.

Days 8-9: Gros Morne National Park

Today sees you north along the Viking Trail to Gros Morne National Park – a UNESCO World Heritage site home to spectacular fjords and giant plateaued mountains. This stunning national park offers beauty and adventure in abundance, with walking trails and nature cruises taking you between remote communities and landscapes home to black bear, moose and Arctic fox. Explore the northern end of the park where towns such as Norris Point provide a base for trips out to Lobster Cove Head Lighthouse and Bonne Bay Marine Station, and tours of the Western Brook Pond Fjord.

Days 10-11: Quirpon Island

Drive across the Northern Peninsula, stopping to visit Port au Choix National Historic Site and see artefacts from the Maritime Archaic people who occupied the region over 3,700 years ago. And, at L'Anse aux Meadows, you'll have the chance to explore the only authentic Viking settlement site left in North America. Then, continue on to Quirpon Dock where a speedboat transfer will bring you out to Quirpon Island for a stay in a refurbished Light Keeper’s residence. Spend your time here whale watching, with humpbacks and minkes commonly sighted, while from mid-July, you might see orcas on their annual migration. And, framing it all, the sight of giant icebergs as they they drift south from Greenland on the Labrador Current.

Day 12: Gros Morne National Park

Returning to Gros Morne via the Viking Trail, you'll have the chance to take in the southern side of the national park, where the landscape is dominated by the magnificent Tablelands, whose bronze-coloured rock has provided scientists with evidence for such theories as plate tectonics. Indeed, these giant, flat-topped peaks are the reason Gros Morne was awarded its UNESCO status in 1987.

Stay: Seaside Suites (Superior)

Days 13-14: Halifax/UK

Depart Gros Morne National Park and continue to Deer Lake airport for your connecting flight via St. Johns or Halifax to the UK, arriving on day 14.
