This is an exciting ride through pristine countryside on excellent horses, which won’t blow your budget. The Golden Treasure Trail is popular with all our riders and is an ideal overseas riding holiday because the horses are reliable and Bulgaria is cheap to get to. We created this trail ride to give riders who perhaps haven’t ridden many trails and haven’t ridden much outside the UK a chance to experience an overseas horse-riding holiday. We’ve included some lovely farmhouse accommodation and a couple of small family-run hotels which all source their food locally and cook delicious traditional meals.
The riding holiday begins at the ranch where the guidesintroduce “Horsemanship” which is the idea that you create a relationship withyour horse before mounting. There are various things you can do to introduceyourself to your horse, understand each other and begin to build trust, beforesetting off on the trail. We have found that this leads to a better partnershipand a more enjoyable experience and a skill that you can bring home with you.So the first afternoon is spent on ground-work.
The trail follows forest paths, fords shallow streams, leads around the headland of meadows and up onto higher mountainsides. It linksvillages and remote hamlets together which combine to show you rural Bulgarianlife that is rich in heritage. The horses know the country well and there isthe opportunity to use all paces.
In the evenings there’s time to relax while sharing dinner together, comparing tails from the day and discussing the plans for the next day. The guides are local people and will tell you about the folklore and history of this area which was the centre of Thrace, an empire that pre-dates the Roman Empire. As we ride along you’ll notice round humps which are burial mounds over 2,000 years old; inside one was found the amazing golden treasure dated 400 B.C. which we’ll see on the last day. Great effort is being made to keep local traditions alive and we’ll spend one evening listening to a local group and dance troop.
Thishorse ride is perfect for intermediate riders and advanced; excellent forfamilies with children who are confident. Advanced riders will particularlyenjoy the “Horsemanship” philosophy and well-schooled, responsive horses.
