Day 1 - Antigua
Departure flight to Guatemala City arriving in the evening. You will be met by your Group Tour Leader, as well as the other members of the group and transferred to the old city of Antigua with colonial courtyards, architecture and cobbled streets. We conduct an introductory briefing and there is the opportunity for a short walk in Antigua. Each evening throughout the tour before dinner your Tour Leader will give a short meeting at the hotel to prepare for the following day's activities and schedule.
Day 2 - City tour Antigua
We have a walking tour of the city, visiting the market with colourful weavings, the coffee museum, the Mayan music Museum with a collection of Mayan musical instruments and a gallery of art.
Day 3 - Chichicastenango
Journey to Chichicastenango known for its traditional K'iche' Maya culture. We will visit the Sunday market, a riotous cacophony of colourful tectiles, local dialects and wood carvings, you will also have time to explore on your own.
Day 4 - Santo Tomas church & travel to Lake Atitlan
Visit the 400-year old church of Santo Tomas, which Pagan Shamans still use for rituals, burning incense and candles. Next we drive to Lake Atitlan, staying for two nights.
Day 5 - Full day excursion across Lake Atitlan
Today we explore the area around lake Atitlan, the magnificent indigenous village of Santiago Atitlan to find the home of the maya God Maximon. We walk the streets, visit the market and church, and learn about the local history, their distincitive textiles and primitive art. Next we visit the small village of Palopo.
Day 6 - Shore of Lake Atitlan & travel to Antigua
Time to explore the shore of Lake Atitlan, before driving to Antigua for 2 nights.
Day 7 - Excursion to weaver village
One day to enjoy Antigua and visit a family of local weavers to learn about the textiles and traditions of their villages.
Day 8 - Guatemala City tour
We drive to Guatemala City for one night. In the afternoon we will explore the town centre.
Day 9 - Transfer to Tikal
Early flight to the Flores in the northern rainforest, and on to the magnificent Mayan archaeological site at Tikal, staying for two nights.
Day 10 - Tour of Tikal
Full day to explore the site with pyramids that extend high above the tree canopy and the numerous Mayan ruins spreadout within the forest. At sunrise troops of monkeys are active in the tree canopy, together with many birds and wildlife finding refuge within the national park.
Day 11 - Travel to San Ignacio, Belize
Today we travel to San Ignasio in Belize, staying two nights in comfortable palm-thatched cottages with a spectacular panorama of the Macal River Valley with many Maya ceremonial caves.
Day 12 - Mountain Pine Ridge
Full day trip to Mountain Pine Ridge, a pine forest with an exuberant undergrowth of ferns next to a contrasting tropical rainforest, ending at the Rio Hondo waterfalls where we have the opportunity to go for a swim.
Day 13 - Orange Walk district
Drive to the Orange Walk district, where jaguars are a possible sighting, as are toucans, iguanas and Baird's tapir. It is the ideal place for birdwatching, with over 400 species of birds recorded in swamps, lagoons and waterways. We stay two nights at the Lamanai lodge.
Day 14 - Lamanai ruins
One full day to explore and visit the spectacular Mayan ruins of the Lamanai Archaeological Reserve.
Day 15 - Departure from Belize City
Short visit Belize City and transfer to the airport for your overnight flight back home, arriving on day 16. Or extend your travel to unwind at one of Belize's beach hotels and resorts, ideal to snorkel and dive in the second largest barrier Reef in the world.
