Day 1 - Travel to Costa Rica
Depart on a daytime flight to San Jose, arriving the same evening. You will be met by your Group Tour Leader, as well as the other members of the group and taken to our hotel for 2 nights. We conduct an introductory briefing and there is the opportunity for a short walk in San Jose. Each evening throughout the tour before dinner your Tour Leader will give a short meeting at the hotel to prepare for the following day's activities and schedule.
Day 2 - Poas Volcano
We visit the fuming crater of Poas Volcano National Park, rich in natural history and with a variety of trails in the forest. We continue to Doka Coffee Plantation, with a tour to see the coffee growing in the ground, the roasting process, followed by a coffee tasting.
Day 3 - Transfer to Tortuguero Park
We set off early on the drive to Tortuguero National Park, passing banana plantations and then take a boat on a picturesque river journey to our lodge in the Tortuguero Park, staying for 2 nights. In the afternoon we take an excursion to see the local town and visit the beach, where thousands of Leather-back Turtles come to nest every year. From July to October it may be possible to see the turtles nesting.
Day 4 - Tour Tortuguero Park
In the morning, accompanied by our guide, we will explore the area, observing the abundance of bird species in this glorious jungle setting with lagoons, home to spider monkeys, macaws, threetoed sloths, caiman and otters, amongst many others.
Day 5 - Travel to Arenal
From Tortuguero we travel to Arenal and transfer to our hotel with a pool and hot springs from the active volcano. In the afternoon you have the flexibility of pursuing your own interests or accompany your Tour Leader on a walk; there is no set itinerary but decided by the Tour Leader. In the evening, weather permitting, witness the colourful lava flows.
Day 6 - Excursion to Arenal Volcano
Spend the day visiting the Arenal Volcano, one of Costa Rica's best attractions. At 5437 feet, its tall and conical shape stands imposing over the pastured green hillsides surrounding its base. You will hike through the rainforest to explore this mighty mountain of fire, discovering the diverse flora and fauna along the journey to the famous lava wall where you walk on ancient lava rock and observe the massive boulders sent flying and tumbling down the volcanoes sides.
Day 7 - Travel to Monteverde
We cross Lake Arenal and drive up windy mountain roads to the pre-mountain cloud forest reserve at Monteverde, staying for two nights. Monteverde Cloud Forrest Reserve is a cold and humid forest, with a diverse ecosystem, high in the mountains with great views of the Gulf of Nicoya and the Pacific. In the afternoon you have the flexibility of pursuing your own interests or accompany your Tour Leader on a walk; there is no set itinerary but decided by the Tour Leader.
Day 8 - Tour of Monteverde Cloud Forest
This morning we walk the numerous trails through the lush forest to learn about the wildlife, birds and its ecosystem. The humidity and higher altitude (1,400 metres) provide a habitat for many species of birds, orchids and mammals, including the noisy howler monkeys and the resplendent quetzal.
Day 9 - Transfer to Manuel Antonio
Transfer west to the Pacific coast, to the small town of Manuel Antonio, surrounded by rainforest, staying for 2 nights in a hotel overlooking the ocean.
Day 10 - Manuel Antonio National Park
One full day at leisure to relax on the beach or visit the national park close by, where well-marked walking trails make it easy to explore and spot wildlife.
Day 11 - Return home
Return to San José in time for your return flight, arriving the following day, day 12. You can also choose to extend your trip by transferring south along the Pacific Coast to spend 3 nights relaxing at the beach or visit the Osa Peninsula by the Pacific for Corcovado National Park.
