Antigua and Lake Atitlan - Day 1 - 2

Day 1 - Travel to Guatemala 

Departure flight Thursday to Guatemala City arriving in the same evening, where you will be met by our representative and taken to your hotel in Antigua. This is also the opportunity  for our guide to provide you advice, explain your programme and answer any questions you may have.

 

Day 2 - Tour of Antigua and travel to Lake Atitlan

Next morning we tour the town, walking in its cobbled street and admiring the colonial buildings with interior courtyard and gardens. Afternoon drive to Panajachel for 1 night, on the shores of magical Lake Atitlan. 

Chichicastenango - Days 3 - 4

Day 3 - Chichicastenango

Morning boat trip to the charming village of Santiago de Atitlan, nestled at the foot of three towering volcanoes, and visit the local market. Drive to Chichicastenango, a picturesque town surrounded by high mountains. Spend one night in our attractive colonial hotel.

 

Day 4 - Sunday market

The following day we go to the bustling Sunday market, where beautifully dressed locals come from far and wide to sell their colourful wares. Return to Antigua in the late afternoon for 2 nights.

Antigua - Day 5

Day 5 - Day at leisure in Antigua

We stay 2 nights in Antigua, Guatemala's cultural centre, replete with museums and churches. You have 1 full day to explore on your own, listen to the traditional Indian music in the bars and cafés and browse the street markets.

Copán in Honduras - Day 6

Day 6 - Mayan site Quiriguá and Copán ruins in the jungle

A morning visit to the remarkable Mayan site Quiriguá, and on to the impressive ruins of Copán, in Honduras, partly reclaimed from the jungle undergrowth, with sections still half-entangled in roots. We see the stele with their intricately carved recordings of a bygone age, and take a nature trail to the minor ball court, in this mysterious jungle setting. Overnight at our hotel in the village of Copán. 

 

Guatemala City - Day 7

Day 7 - Guatemala City

Guatemala City has grown around one of America's most notable archaeological sites, Kaminaljuyu, and, in some cases, on top of some of the outlying ruins before they were protected. It is now located in a park inside the city. We stay one night, before our early flight the next day.

 

Jungle temples - Days 8 - 9

Day 8 - El Ceibal

Fly to Flores and visit El Ceibal, an array of fine, well-preserved stone carvings, set amidst thick jungle. Continue to our jungle lodge at Petexbatun lagoon for 1 night.

 

Day 9 - Archeological site of Aguateca

The following morning takes us to the Aguateca archaeological site, where the jungle still retains its grasp on the partially excavated ruins creating an atmosphere charged with mystery and mysticism. Transfer to our jungle lodge at Tikal for 2 nights.

 

Day 10 - Explore the wildlife around Tikal

A full day excursion around the vast, magical Mayan site of Tikal. Guided along trails, we come across mighty temples which rise up above cloud-covered tropical forest, in an area of abundant wildlife.

Return via Antigua - Days 11 - 13

Day 11-13 - Antigua at your own leisure

Return to Antigua for a 2 night stay to further explore the city, relax and browse the colourful Indian markets. Transfer in the afternoon of Day 13 to Guatemala City for our overnight flight, returning home the following day, Day 14.
