Starting in Tokyo our Japan Experience tour takes in some of the best that Japan has to offer. After a day’s sightseeing of the old and new city of Tokyo, venture out of the city to the shrines of Nikko and Mount Fuji.
Spend two days immersed in the timeless town of Takayama and move on to the World Heritage Site of Shirakawago, before continuing to Kanazawa. In the cultural heartland of the Kyoto region, you have three full days to explore the rich history, culture and tradition of this fascinating city. You will have the chance to rejuvenate in the hot springs at Hakone and visit the ancient capital city of Nara. Travel home via Osaka.
Day 1 Tokyo
Arrive in Tokyo and transfer by airport bus to the Shiba Park hotel or similar, for a three-night stay.
Day 2 Tokyo
Explore the capital with a private guide using Tokyo’s excellent public transportation. Visit Meiji Jingu shrine, the historic Asakusa district and take a cruise down the Sumida river to Hamarikyu gardens.
Day 3 Tokyo
Take a trip north, by shared coach, to visit Nikko today. Set in beautiful surroundings, this World Heritage site has been a Centre of Shinto and Buddhist mountain worship for many centuries.
Day 4 Mount Fuji, Hakone
Travel to the beautiful Hakone National Park via Mount Fuji by shared coach. Stop on the slopes, at a height of over 2000m and admire the panoramic views (weather permitting). Later enjoy a cruise on Lake Ashi, and a lovely cable car-ride. Stay overnight at the Ichinoyu Honkan or similar. You can enjoy a soak in the hotel’s hot spring bath.
Day 5 Takayama
In the morning transfer to Odawara then by bullet and express train to Takayama. This journey takes in some glorious mountain scenery. After checking into the Takayama Ouan hotel for a two-night stay, take time at leisure to enjoy an afternoon stroll. You can visit the old traditional district, festival hall and folk craft museum.
Day 6 Takayama
Day at leisure to explore the town on your own.
Day 7 Takayama, Shirakawago, Kanazawa
Take a public bus to Shirakawa-go World Heritage village, nestling in the scenic mountains of Central Japan. Continue on to Kanazawa and check in to the ANA Crowne Plaza Kanazawa Hotel or similar for two nights.
Day 8 Kanazawa
Day is at leisure to visit the famous Kenroku-en gardens.
Day 9 Kanazawa, Kyoto
Take the bullet train to Kyoto and stay for three nights at Hotel Vista Premio Kyoto hotel or similar. Rest of the day is at leisure.
Day 10 Kyoto
A treasure trove of Japanese history and tradition, Kyoto used to be the national capital for more than one thousand years. Explore the city with a private guide, using public transportation. Visit the Imperial Palace, Kyoto Handicraft centre, Nijo Castle, Kinkakuji and the Kiyomizu temple on your full day tour.
Day 11 Kyoto
This morning, take part in a Tea Ceremony at Wak Japan. Visit Nara in the afternoon, known for some of Japan’s oldest and largest temples. Afternoon is at leisure.
Day 12 Kyoto
Transfer to Kansai airport for your onward flight.
