Reference number: Victoria Falls Conservation Experience

From: £725.00

Starts Dates are Every Sunday of each month.
Based just 10 minutes away from one of the seven natural wonders of the world, Victoria Falls, this 2,500-hectare game reserve offers volunteers a conservation experience like no other. This reserve is home to the critically endangered black rhino and the other animal species that make up Africa’s famous ‘Big 5’. As a volunteer, you’ll make a difference and contribute to the conservation of Zimbabwe’s varied and remarkable wildlife. By aiding the integration of wildlife, community and education you’ll help the project achieve its goals of implementing sustainable solutions to the problems faced by the conservation in the area.
Due to the widespread poaching of rhinos in Southern Africa and intensive monitoring programme has been implemented at the reserve to keep the black rhino residents safe. Volunteers also help to protect the reserve animals by taking part in elephant and rhino identification, anti-poaching snare sweeps, game counts and fence patrols.
The reserve is very active, and no two days are the same! Spend a morning at the awe-inspiring Victoria Falls and learn all you can about the world's largest sheet of falling water. On this project, volunteers are able to leave their mark on Zimbabwean conservation and enjoy an adventure of a lifetime!

Victoria Falls Visit
Take a walk along the world’s largest sheet of falling water! Spend the morning learning and admiring one of the seven natural wonders of the world.
Reserve Research
Volunteers will join the project staff in collecting observational data on the elephant, rhino, hornbill and predator populations. You’ll assist by taking notes of the locations, numbers and behaviours of all these animal species. Volunteers will also participate in freshwater ecosystem analysis along the Masuwe River.
Tree Protection
The project is committed to minimising environmental impact and actively implements ‘green’ operations. One of them being tree protection, where volunteers will help to map trees and prevent elephants from pushing them over and stripping the bark.
Bush Walk
Volunteers will have the opportunity to join bush walks where you’ll stray off the beaten track. This is a great way to see some of Zimbabwe’s smaller animals and learn about the areas extensive flora and fauna.
Elephant and Rhino Identification
There is a major focus on identifying the elephants and rhinos on the reserve. Helping the in-country team gain a more accurate number of the animals present and better insights into the range that they cover.
Alien Plant Removal
Removal of invasive plant species such as the Latana bush is an important activity for volunteers to partake in. By removing these plants the reserve can return to its pristine and natural settings allowing the local wildlife to thrive.
Conservation Management Activities
For any big reserve, it is essential that conservation management activities are carried out. These activities include game counts, predator checks, fence patrols, anti-poaching sweeps and general maintenance work that all volunteers will be involved with.
School Visit
The project is extremely proud of its ability to improve the futures of the pupils at the Masuwe school. The project staff and volunteers assist with various maintenance tasks to provide the children with a better learning environment. Past projects have included painting classrooms and repairing fences.
Camp Out
Enjoy a night around the campfire, under a starry sky and listening to the sounds of an African night-time! This activity will allow you to truly experience a night in the African bush!
