Reference number: Panda Volunteer Experience in China
Set in the stunning Bifengxia mountain range, the panda reserve is home to over 40 bears! This reserve was originally located in a different part of China but was sadly destroyed after an earthquake. Since the relocation in 2008, the population of pandas at the reserve doubled and their quality of life has improved.
The giant panda population overall has increased and due to this, they have been downgraded from endangered to vulnerable. The reserve aims to keep a steady increase and protect these bears from the dangers they unfortunately still face.
As a volunteer on this project, you’ll help to provide care to these yin-yang bears and will experience a cultural exchange in one of the world’s most fascinating countries! By preparing the pandas food, feeding them and cleaning their indoor and outdoor enclosures you’ll help these bears live their best lives!
City Tour and Breeding Centre Visit
Volunteers start their trip with a visit to the Chengdu Panda Breeding Centre, where you’ll learn about the extremely important conservation work that is carried out here. This is followed by a city walking tour, where you’ll experience the buzz of an authentic Chinese city!
As these fuzzy black and white bears eat 4 times a day (!) volunteers are needed to assist with the preparation of their food which usually consists of apples, carrots, panda cake and of course, bamboo. The keepers will assign feeding tasks and usually, volunteers will have the opportunity to hand feed these beautiful bears through their enclosures!
Volunteers are sometimes involved in the research of the giant panda behaviours and their health. By assisting with this research you’ll help to gain extensive knowledge about these bears aiding in the conservation and potentially improving their chances of survival in the wild.
These pandas have 2 enclosures, one indoor and the other outdoor. Both will need cleaning to make sure these bears have comfortable and safe places to live. Volunteers will assist with tidying up after these messy bears!
Exploring the Reserve
Volunteers have full access to all of the reserve so in your free time it’s worth checking out the nursery and seeing the young pandas play! You can also visit the educational facilities and the animal rescue centre!
During your time on this project, you’ll have ample opportunity to take part in many cultural activities such as learning the language and calligraphy lessons. Volunteers can also learn how to make Chinese dumplings and the ancient game of Majhong.
