This tailor-made, twin centre itinerary combines two of Bosnia-Herzegovina’s most appealing yet most diverse cities - Bosnia’s cosmopolitan capital Sarajevo and Herzegovina’s Ottoman gem, Mostar. Travel between the two by local bus, with tickets delivered directly to your hotel, enjoying free time in each city to explore at your own pace.Since the tragic war years, Sarajevo has undergone a major facelift, with pedestrianised city centre walkways, rejuvenated Austro- Hungarian facades and teeming cafés buzzing day and night. For a spectacular panoramic view, perhaps begin at Jajce Castle which watches over the old town below. Wander down the capital’s backstreets into Bascarsija, Sarajevo’s Turkish quarter and discover an oriental mix of coffee shops, mosques, madrasahs and caravanserais, or stroll along charming Ferhadija to the eternal flame which burns in memory of the many who lost their lives during the conflict. Perhaps consider an optional half-day excursion to Sarajevo’s surrounding hills and traditional villages. Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant and visit the Tunnel Museum to gain an insight into the 700 metre tunnel which provided a lifeline to people living in the besieged capital. Separated from Bosnia by the towering Dinaric Alps, a warm Mediterranean climate prevails in Herzegovina. Travel between the two notably different landscapes by local bus and arrive in Mostar on the banks of the Neretva river. Mostar thrived under Turkish rule in the 15th and 16th centuries, and the cobblestone streets of the city’s old Ottoman town are the perfect place to begin. Be sure to cross Stari Most, the famous stone bridge rebuilt in 2004, for wonderful views of the historic buildings and the mountains beyond.
