The 1978 Constitution of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic recognised 16 autonomous republics. Stepping firmly off the tourist trail, this new small group tour, escorted by a tour leader from Regent Holidays, explores six of the republics, where the diverse range of ethnic groups means traditional dress, customs and local dishes vary from town to town. Learn about Tatars, Chechens, Kazakhs, Ukrainians, Armenians, Finns, Germans, Jews, Buryats and Bashkirs in a land of great ethnic diversity.
Discover the main sights in Russia's capital before boarding the train to Cheboksary, a city boasting over 25 churches and four monasteries. Explore Kazan, often referred to as Russia's third capital, travel to the former closed city of Izhevsk, home of the red-bricked Saint Mikhailov Catherdral and spend time in Mari El with its impressive square and pagan traditions. Visit Perm, a closed city during the Soviet times due to the production of military equipment, and Kudymkar - home of Komi or Zyrian ethnic group. Transfer to Solikamsk, one of the oldest cities in the Urals founded in 1430 by miners and merchants, and visit various villages in and around the city before coming back to the great Moscow.
Most of these places with the exception of Kazan are hardly on any tourist map of Russia so bring your sense of adventure and love of all things Russian on this small group tour to Russia.
