Guided Walking Holidays Through the Heart of New England Experience the dazzling fall colours of New England in the best possible way, on foot. Whether following the historic Freedom Trail through the best of Boston or traversing the slopes of Mount Washington, colour follows you everywhere. You walk a section of the Appalachian Trail and you wont believe the views from the Jay Peak summit thousands of sugar maple trees burning red in the autumn sunshine. We start in the small and friendly town of Salem, infamous for its 17th century witch trials. From here we take a short train ride into Boston for the day and walk the Freedom Trail tracing the citys history from Puritans to the present day. Heading into New Hampshire and Bretton Woods we can walk on the Appalachian or Mount Willard Trail to take the easy ascent up Mount Willard for excellent views. We can also spend time on the slopes of Sugarloaf Mountain or possibly Mount Washington, the highest peak in the eastern US. We walk the last short stretch of the way to our next hotel in Stowe, Vermont, stopping in an idyllic riverside spot for lunch. Possibilities here include exploring the Von Trapps family estate in Stowe and following the Sterling Pond Trail. Bigger walks up Mount Mansfield or Stowe Pinnacle are possible on a free day. Our final centre is at Jay Peak, close to the Canadian border. We can use the tram to reach Jay Peak summit. Here a local guide helps out, so we can offer a choice of easier and harder walks. On our final day we cross into Canada, visiting the old quarter of Montreal on the way to the airport. Starting in the south and working our way north, whichever date you choose to travel should enable you to see the fall colours at their peak in at least one of the centres. Some of the walks will be at the top end of the grade, particularly in Bretton Woods.
