Invigorate your senses in Iceland.Experience this journey with Ramblers Walking Holidays. Our first centre in western Iceland is Reykholt, 20 minutes from the main walking area surrounding Bifrost. The basalt landscape of the wide valley floor with its rivers and lakes is flanked by long mountain ridges and volcanic cones. The centrepiece is the three million year old near perfect volcanic cone of Baula. Next we move northwards to historic Akureyri, at the head of Eyjafjrdur, opening to the ocean just 25 miles south of the Arctic Circle. The surrounding flat-topped mountains are formed from ancient lava, carved by vast glaciers into steep-sided ridges, some still topped with ice. We walk from Akureyri and can make trips further afield to the tiny coastal towns of Olafsfjrdur or Husavik and include a day trip to Myvatn, a beautiful lake in an€tive volcanic area, home to much bird life and surrounded by geothermal landscapes. From Akureyri, we cross the Interior Highlands, passing hot springs, majestic mountains and vast expanses of snow topped wilderness. We descend to the magnificent Gullfoss (Golden Waterfall). At Geysir Strokkur shoots boiling water into the air every few minutes. Our days journey ends at Hverageri, Icelands flower town edged by steaming geysers and mud pits. Our final night is spent in the capital, Reykjavk.
