Guided Walking Holidays - High in the Alpujarras From your vantage point on the high mountain trail you look€ross a rugged landscape dominated by the peaks of the Sierra Nevada. Traversing the scenic paths, you pass through fertile land rich in orchards of almonds, figs and bright red cherries and descend through whitewashed villages glowing in the bright sunshine. Experience this journey with Ramblers Walking Holidays. South of the Sierra Nevada range and north of the Sierras of Lujar, La Contraviesa and Gador, lie the Alpujarras Valleys. This rugged yet stunningly beautiful area includes mainland Spains highest peak, Mulhacen. Farmland here is terraced so as to feed off the constant supply of water from the melting snow of the mountains. Seven hundred years ago the Moors settled in this region after being defeated during the re-conquest of Spain. Over two centuries they turned the mountain wilderness into a garden paradise until in 1568, when an uprising against the Christians ended in failure and led to a royal decree expelling all people of Arab descent from the Kingdom of Granada. Heavenly is a good way to describe our centre at Capileira, which is perched above the Poquiera Gorge, at some 1432m, a few miles from the small town of Orgiva. The landscape is that of mountains and terraced lands of orchards, vines and olives, irrigated by surrounding deep gorges. Adding to this tranquil atmosphere are the whitewashed houses and cobbled streets of Capileira. Theres a good range of walks from the village, with a myriad of fine scenic paths diverging in all directions. We mainly walk along narrow stony trails, steep at times. The walks arent long, but there is plenty of up and down. Several walks start at the hotel most finish at a bar! Youll encounter attractive villages, high mountain trails and spectacular panoramas. The challenge of the Alpujarras awaits!
