The warm humid Caribbean air filled with the scents of the tropics is an ideal€companiment to a reflective Mojito at the end of a day. There is much to reflect on, a lesson in cigar making, a trip in a 1950s taxi, a walk through fields of pineapple and tobacco or the time warp experience of Spanish colonial cities. Then let the music catch your attention, it is never far away. Or maybe muse on Cubas unique political experiment. The facts are well known but always worthy of further consideration on a balmy Cuban night. We fly into Havana and have two nights to€quaint ourselves with the music, sights and atmosphere of one of the most distinctive capital cities in the world. We fly east and continue by road to Baracoa to walk where Columbus landed more than 500 years earlier. We have a long day stopping in Santiago for lunch and sightseeing and then on to Bayamo. We walk to Castros command centre during the revolution. A fascinating insight into what happened. Continuing west with a night at Camaguey and a cycle taxi tour of the town we reach old Trinidad, one of the best preserved colonial cities in the Americas. Whilst here we stay in Casa Particulares, Cuban houses, to get the best idea of life for the locals. We walk in the Sierra del Escambray. Next to Santa Clara, perhaps the most Cuban of cities and home to the Che Guevara memorial. Finally we reach the Sierra del Rosario Mountains with three nights at Vinales. Here we explore the rare Karst rock formations of the Vinales Valley. We will walk past fields of tobacco and pineapple, stopping for lunch at a farmers hut. This is a holiday for the traveller and has a pioneer status to indicate the spirit of adventure, as things may not always go as expected its the Cuban way! Visit soon with the new spirit of entente, Cuba is changing fast and isnt going to remain untouched forever.
