This good-value eight-night, semi-participatory camping safari takes in the scenic highlights of the southern Namibia including Sossusvlei, Fish River Canyon, the remote Orange River and Luderitz. Your first night in Namibia is in a guesthouse in Windhoek. Two further nights are spent in flight.
There is a camp assistant who does chores like cooking and washing-up, you are expected to erect and dismantle your own tent. Most of the time you'll stay at campsites with proper showers and toilets. You sleep in 1.6 metre high dome tents with comfortable 5cm thick mattresses. This type of trip suits those who want to see as much as possible during their holidays and are flexible and sociable.
You travel in a minibus, unless there are more than eight, in which case it is a Toyota Hino pop- top. Group size is limited to 16. Minimum age is 12. These tours work well for couples, families and solo travellers alike.
Day 1 Depart from London on overnight flight to Johannesburg.
Day 2 On arrival, check in for onward flight to Windhoek. Transfer to guest house for overnight stay to rest from your long flight and prepare yourself for your Namibian , breakfast included.
Day 3 Early departure south-East to the desert across the Eros Mountains, the immense red sand dune desert of the Namib. We aim to arrive at our camp during the late afternoon and watch the colours glow and change on distant mountains to the east.
Day 4 Early morning departure for the Fish River Canyon passing Mariental and Keetmanshoop on the way, you will stop and visit the Mesosaurus Fossil Site. Tonight you will camp in the Fish River area after visiting the Quiver Tree.
Day 5 Today you will have an early morning visit to the Fish River Canyon to catch the right light for some amazing photographs. The Canyon is the second largest in the word only to the Grand Canyon. In the afternoon you we will pack up the camp and make our way for Aus. Camping on the beautiful Klein Aus Vista Reserve.
Day 6 Today you will make your way to Luderitz where you will be given the option of joining a Marine Excursion, cruising around the Luderitz Bay and weather permitting to the Halifax Island to see the Jackass Penguins. You will also be visiting Kolmanskop a deserted Ghost Town near Luderitz. It was built during the diamond rush in the 1920's and abandoned when bigger and better diamonds were found further along the coast. The town was abandoned and has a really eerie feeling to it.
Day 7 Today you will journey North to the harsh and magnificent Namib Desert. The scenery will slowly start to transform and the bright red Dunes will become apparent. You will set up camp here getting ready to watch the sunset and the colours changing in the distance.
Day 8 Today a predawn start is definitely a must. You want to watch the colours change as the sun comes up, catching some amazing images of the Dunes. You will then be given the opportunity to try and climb Dune 45 yourself! Not as easy as it looks! In the afternoon you will be taken for an excursion of Sesriem Canyon.
Day 9 Early morning start for the journey back to Windhoek. You will spend one last night in Windhoek before returning home.
Day 10 Today you will be transferred back to the airport for your return flight to London Heathrow via Johannesburg.
