Itinerary

Day 1 Depart London (please ask for regional departures) for your flight to the capital city of Lima. The small luxurious Hotel B, located in the bohemian neighbourhood of Barranco is the perfect spot for an array of culture. Visit the art galleries and workshops nestled next to cafes, bars and live music venues.

Day 2 Our guided visit to Lima allows you to see the Historical Centre: Plaza Mayor (Main Square), the Government Palace, the Archbishop's Palace, the City Hall and old streets with colonial mansions and Moorish balconies. You will also visit Santo Domingo Convent, an icon of colonial architecture, which was completed in the late stages of the sixteenth century and has been restored recently. End your tour in Miraflores district., to enjoy a splendid view of the Pacific Ocean from the Park of Love.

Day 3 Take the short flight to Puerto Maldonado (via Cuzco) in the Amazon for your rainforest experience. On arrival, take the road transfer to the river bank and motorised canoe to Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica for a three night jungle experience. Immerse yourself in the lush rainforest, as you relax in your hammock listening to the sounds of nature contemplating your rainforest adventure.

Day 4 An a la carte choice of guided daily excursions are included. Our favourites include the canopy walkway where you quite literally see the forest from a bird's eye view, the jungle trails for seeking out the Amazon wildlife and the night time walk to listen to the activity and noises of the rainforest in darkness. Also, don't miss the boat trip to the remote Sandoval Lake (not available during the wet season), home to the Giant River Otters. After your days of adventure and exploration, visit the Ena spa for a cooling cold stone massage or an Amazon purification treatment.

Day 5

Day 6 Leave the magic of the Amazon behind and take the short flight to Cuzco, transferring directly to the Sacred Valley of the Incas just north of the city. The lower altitude helps ease you into life in the Peruvian Highlands and immerse you into the fascinating Incan history. A number of important villages remain such as Pisac with its colourful market and Ollantaytambo ruins that sit above a series of terraces behind the town. Back in Incan times this fortress was used for both protection and for astronomical observation.

Day 7 Explore this diverse area perhaps starting with a visit to the huge, circular, agricultural terraces at Moray overlooking the Urubamba Valley. The Incas created these terraces in natural sink holes on a limestone plateau supposedly for an agricultural experiment. Although it has been suggested they have a cosmological meaning, their function, other than agricultural, remains a mystery. Nearby, see the ancient terraced salt mines and ponds which sit below the colonial town of Maras. The Sacred Valley is a prime adventure sports destination. Trek the dramatic mountains, mountain bike along the trails, horse ride at one of the nearby ranches or for the ultimate adventure white water raft down the Urubamba River.

Day 8 Board the Peru Rail Vistadome service to Aguas Calientes, the closest town to Machu Picchu. With your local guide delve into the history surrounding this ancient citadel, exploring the site and learning about how the ancient Incas lived. A myriad of photo opportunities as the light changes dramatically throughout the day. Retreat to your luxurious hotel after day of breathtaking vistas.

Day 9 Take the opportunity to revisit Machu Picchu early morning as the sun rises. Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo also offer a host of included excursions. With your guide, .walk along the Vilcanota River which follows the railway tracks to Mandor Valley. Here, the area is inhabited by a variety of fascinating birdlife, including cock-of-the-rock, speckle-faced parrots and green jays. Relax and bathe under a secluded waterfall before walking back to the hotel in the shadow of Machu Picchu. In the 12 acres of hotel grounds visit the tea plantation or look for the spectacled bear. Unu spa is a wonderful way to relax with an ancient Inca purification treatment.

Day 10 Take the return train through to undulating scenery of the Sacred Valley. Inkaterra La Casona hotel in Cuzco is a small, intimate hotel with only 11 luxury suites with a colonial and Inca style. Originally a 16th century manor house the building has been lovingly restored to a stylish boutique hotel.

Day 11 Historical Cuzco oozes charm and history. Easily walkable and compact, soak up the mystery of the cathedral, Temple of the Sun and the famous twelve-sided stone. Explore the city's narrow cobbled streets complete with walls that are fine examples of Inca Architecture. Meander around the San Blas suburb, the residence of some of Peru's best artists, ending at Sacsayhuaman, a fortress-temple overlooking the city and the scene of one of the bloodiest battles between the Incas and the conquistadors.

Day 12

Day 13 Depart Cuzco for your return flight to the UK.
