Reunion is a geological wonder full of volcanic peaks, deep ravines, tumbling waterfalls and emerald forests. This is a dream destination for nature enthusiasts and outdoor lovers. One of the best ways to enjoy Reunion's dramatic scenery is by bike and it's possible to cycle distances of up to 80km on this charming and remote island.

One of the world's most active volcanoes is the Piton de la Fournaise. You can trek to the crater's rim to see the striking colours of the peaks and calderas littering the landscape below. From here enjoy the spectacular vistas of stunning untouched nature. Pedal down the exciting mountain pass Col de Bellevue before ascending the winding mountain road up to the volcanic caldera of Cirque Salazie.

One of the Indian Ocean's hidden secrets Reunion is a wonderful island adventure. This itinerary is based on a minimum of eight people with departure dates of the 4th and 10th of July or we can organise this holiday as a private departure.

Itinerary

Day 1 Depart London Heathrow on an Air Austral flight to Paris where you will connect with the flight to Reunion.

Day 2 On arrival you will be transferred to the west of the island to Saint Leu. Here you will spend two nights in Iloha Seaview. Perched on the hillside and spread across tropical gardens, Iloha Seaview is in the perfect location for you to start exploring the island’s captivating nature or simply relax surrounded by its beauty. In the afternoon start your cycling adventure, meeting the rest of your group before collecting your bike. Afterwards enjoy a casual walk down to the beach or travel into Saint Leu to wander amongst the handsome stone buildings dating back from the French colonial era.

Day 3 After breakfast you will set off for your first cycle ride, following a picturesque 70km route along the west coast of the island. Your afternoon is free to spend as you wish with options including having your muscles tended to in the spa or reclining around the pool. However we would recommend visiting Piton de la Fournaise, the island’s most famous natural attraction. Easily accessible, hike up to the crater rim and survey the lunar landscape around you full of striking colours of burnt umber, smoky topaz and jet black.

Day 4 After a hearty breakfast cycle 55km up the slopes of Piton de la Fournaise past the damage left by the flows of lava, the last eruption in February 2015. The views from the volcano’s peak of the islet are absolutely spectacular, the rocky ravines and verdant forests spread out before you. Following lunch you will be transferred to La Plaines des Cafres for a visit to La Maison du Volcan, an innovative museum about the nature of the land and the geological history of the island. Finish your exciting day with a stay in a traditional gite in Bourg Murat, a charming French inspired holiday home.

Day 5 In the morning cycle the mountain pass Col de Bellevue, the highest road on the island threaded between the villages Bourg-Murat and La Plaine-des-Palmistes. Your thrilling cycle ride will take you to Cirque Salazie. As you approach this natural amphitheatre, you will cycle past breath taking scenery of dramatic peaks, sweeping vistas and cascading waterfalls. Your hotel for the night is the Palm Hotel & Spa, named the most exclusive hotel on the island and the perfect place to rest after your exhilarating and exhausting day covering 80km. Enjoy the delicious Creole influenced food out on The Deck encircled by beautiful views of the Grand Anse Bay.

Day 6 Today cycle to Cirque de Cilaos, up the 400 twists and turns of this memorable sometimes nail biting road. Arrive at the natural wonder of Cilaos, filled with colourful fields of flowers, dense forests and tumbling waterfalls. Cilaos is an absolutely dazzling place to spend an afternoon exploring all it has to offer. After your idyllic afternoon you will be transferred back to Palm Hotel & Spa for a restful evening.

Day 7 On your last full day, enjoy a leisurely breakfast before spending the morning making the most of Palm Hotel & Spa’s comfort and luxury such as the spa with a Turkish bath and a massage hut with a flower bath. In the afternoon cycle the Wild South route starting in Saint Pierre, the snaking trail leading you along the south coast to Saint Rose.

Day 8 For a last cycling challenge, pedal the 40km up to Maido a trail known as one of the hardest in Europe. Upon achieving the demanding route and reaching the top, you will be able to enjoy the amazing panoramic views on the Cirque de Mafate. An ideal and beautiful send off. Here you will have lunch before heading back to the hotel for a goodbye cocktail. After freshening up you will be collected for your transfer to the airport for your international flight to Charles de Gaulle.

Day 9 On arrival at Charles de Gaulle, you'll connect with your flight back to London where you will arrive early morning.
