This holiday aims to introduce the whole family to the natural wonders of Costa Rica and to discover its rainforests, volcanoes, beaches and a host of stunning flora and fauna. Adults and children alike are guaranteed a fantastic lesson in Costa Rica's incredible biodiversity. This itinerary features family-friendly accommodation and combines a perfect balance of adventure and action packed activities with relaxation. Fly through the rainforest canopies like a bird, float down the river as you spot monkeys, butterflies and sloths, step out into the jungle under the cover of darkness in search of brightly coloured frogs and soak in bubbling hot springs. End your Costa Rican adventure on the beautiful Pacific coast in Manuel Antonio for a few days of R&R while the kids can take part in a host of activities. 

Itinerary

Day 1 Fly direct with British Airways to San Jose. On arrival to the capital, you are met and transferred to the Crowne Plaza Corobici for a two night stay. Close to both the airport and the downtown area, this is an ideal base from which to start your Costa Rica adventure.

Day 2 Drive to Poas Volcano with a stop at Doka coffee plantation where you have the opportunity to learn about the coffee process and enjoy breakfast. Poas volcano is one of the most spectacular in the country with its crater measuring one kilometre. Take a hike to Botos Lagoon. Continue to the La Paz Waterfall Gardens where you can see the lush flora and fauna of the rainforest and the waterfalls. You'll spot a huge array of flowers, butterflies, orchids and hummingbirds.

Day 3 This morning you are transferred to the town of La Fortuna which is located close to the magnificent Arenal Volcano. Stay two nights at the Arenal Springs Hotel which is fantastic base for exploring the Arenal National Park and ideal for families. Enjoy the hotel's numerous swimming pools and soak in the hot springs surrounded by lush, tropical gardens. Arenal is an adventurers playground; choose from activities such as zip-lining, mountain biking, hiking and wildlife spotting.

Day 4 Today enjoy the cacaphony of the rainforest as you float down the Peñas Blancas River and spot colourful birds, monkeys, sloths and butterflies. Ideal for children, birders and nature lovers. This afternoon is at leisure.

Day 5 Today transfer to Monteverde, cross Arenal Lake (both a tour and transfer!)by boat taking in stunning views of the volcano and continue the rest of the journey by road. Spend the next two nights at the Trapp Family Lodge, the closest hotel to the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve. As dusk falls head out to discover the cloud forest under the cover of darkness. Buzzing with nocturnal activity; spot snakes, colourful frogs, spiders and bats as you set out with torches and discover a whole new ecosystem.

Day 6 Today visit the Sky Adventure Park to get a bird's eye view of the jungle below. Glide through the canopy on an aerial tram to spot birds and monkeys, thrill seekers can reach speeds of up to 40 mph soaring through the trees by zip-line (attached to a cable and secured into a harness) and from a network of high suspension bridges built into the treetops, take in incredible views of the surrounding cloud forest.

Day 7 This morning depart Monteverde and head to the Central Pacific Coast. Manuel Antonio; home to one of the most famous National Parks is where the stunning jungle meets the Pacific Ocean. Spend the next 3 nights at the fantastic family friendly property; Si Como No and relax and discover the local area.

Day 8 The next two days are at leisure to do as much or a little as you wish. With a fun family pool with a waterfall slide, kids can play safely while the adults relax. A butterfly garden, state of the art cinema and views over the rainforest and Pacific coast; this is the ideal end to a week of exploration. For those still seeking adventure, many excursions can be booked in this area from white-water rafting, boat trips, kayaking and horseriding. Run by the hotel, just opposite the property is a private wildlife refuge where you can see reptiles, amphibians and butterflies.

Day 9 Day at leisure. Rainbow Tours recommend visiting the nearby Manuel Antonio National Park. Jungle clad beaches, rocky headlands and lush rainforest make up this park and it offers visitors excellent wildlife viewing opportunities. Spot white-faced capuchins, spider and howler monkeys hanging in the trees, agoutis, coastis, sloths and many colourful birds.

Day 10 Today transfer by road to San Jose to catch you direct overnight flight back to the UK.
