This holiday aims to introduce the whole family to the natural wonders of Costa Rica, including rainforests, volcanoes, beaches and a host of stunning flora and fauna. The 11-day trip includes opportunities throughout for both adults and children to take part in activities such as learning about chocolate making and riding the aerial tram in the La Tirimbina Rainforest Reserve, or discovering life in the forest canopy on a circuit of the hanging bridges near the Arenal Volcano.
The itinerary features accommodation in picturesque, family-friendly lodges as well as two nights on the beach, where the parents can relax while the children can enjoy safe swimming on one of Costa Rica's gorgeous beaches, along with range of activities including water sports and nature activities.
Day 1 On arrival in the capital San Jose, you are met and transferred to Crowne Plaza Corobici for a two night stay. Just 15 minutes from the airport and 10 minutes from the downtown area, this is an ideal base from which to start your Costa Rica adventure.
Day 2 Drive to Poas Volcano with a stop at Doka coffee plantation where you have the opportunity to learn about the coffee process and enjoy breakfast. Poas volcano is one of the most spectacular in the country with its crater measuring one kilometre. Take a hike to Botos Lagoon. Continue to the La Paz Waterfall Gardens where you can see the lush flora and fauna of the rainforest and the waterfalls. You'll spot a huge array of flowers, butterflies, orchids and hummingbirds.
Day 3 This morning there is an early transfer to Sarapiqui in the northern Caribbean Lowlands via Braulio Carrillo National Park. You stop en route at the Rainforest Aerial Tram (a premier eco-tourism park) located 50 minutes from San Jose. Here the tram takes you into the upper and intermediate levels of the rainforest. The tram ride is about 2.5km long and takes around 80 minutes. Lunch can be eaten at the Rainforest Cafe (not included). After lunch you continue to Sarapiqui whenre you are based at the family-run La Quinta de Sarapiqui Lodge for the next two nights.
Day 4 The Sarapiqui River is a slow moving and pleasant river, ideal for wildlife spotting and suitable for children. On the trip you may see monkeys, sloths, iguanas, caimans, crocodiles and a wild variety of bird species. Your knowledgeable guide will explain about the flora and fauna.
Day 5 This morning you are transferred to the town of La Fortuna which is located close to the magnificent Arenal Volcano. You stay for two nights at the Arenal Springs Hotel which is fantastic base for exploring the Arenal National Park. On-site the hotel has a Ti-Cain restaurant which serves both lunch and dinner at a reasonable price. In the afternoon there is a 2.5 hour tour of the Arenal Volcano itself which involves a gentle hike that takes you through the forest and close to the volcano. At 5437 feet, the tall and classic conical shape is impressive.
Day 6 After breakfast enjoy a natural history walk. On this 3km walk you follow well-marked trails and learn about the forest environment and the bird life that lives here. This is a popular way for all the family to enjoy the natural surroundings at their own pace. The afternoon is free and can be spent at the hotel pool - there is one for adults and one for kids. The hotel restaurant serves a good range of national and international dishes.
Day 7 Today you transfer to Monteverde by boat along the Arenal Lake (both a tour and transfer!). For those who have some experience of riding we can offer part of this transfer on horseback, please ask for a supplement. Stay for two nights at the Monteverde Cloud Forest Lodge which is located near the small and friendly town of Santa Elena. In the afternoon there is visit a traditional sugar cane mill and coffee plantation which is informative and fun.
Day 8 Today you visit the Selvatura Park where there is a guided tour of the butterfly garden as well as the popular snake and frog farm, where you can get up close to the local species that inhabit the forests.
Day 9 Your remaining two days are spent at the coast based at the Punta Leona Hotel, close to Jacó beach on the Central Pacific coast. The beach here is safe and the waters are calm, perfect for swimming. There are many activities available for all the family and this is a beautiful location for relaxing before returning home.
Day 11 This morning you will be picked up and transferred to the airport at San Jose for your return flight to the UK.
