Itinerary

Day 1 A Rainbow Tours representative will meet you upon arrival in Kota Kinabalu and take you to your hotel, the Shangri-La Tanjung Aru Resort & Spa. You have the rest of the day to explore the local area or relax at the hotel.

Day 2 Today you will explore the Kinabalu National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Centre for Plant Diversity in South East Asia, this is one of the most varied and exciting wildlife locations in the world. You’ll notice the drop in temperature after coming from Kota Kinabalu, and often the gardens are embellished with an atmospheric shroud of mist. The park is home to almost 100 species of mammal and over 5,000 varieties of plants. During your visit stop by the Exhibition Hall before climbing up to the viewing point for a spectacular view of your surroundings, as well as a vista of Mount Kinabalu, which stands at 13,435 feet tall.

Day 3 This morning is yours to explore the area around Kinabalu at leisure, before you travel to Sandakan. Tonight you will tour the Sepilok Forest Trails on a guided wildlife walk.

Day 4 The Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre houses orphaned orangutans of all ages and rehabilitates them for release back into the wild. The centre has a free-roaming area and visitors can also watch the young orangutans’ feeding time in the morning before exploring the centre and the wider reserve further. Following your morning with the orangutans you can observe the Malayan Sun bear at the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre. The Sun bear is the world’s smallest bear, and the centre works to rehabilitate and care for Sun bears who have been orphaned or kept illegally as pets. Later in the day you can visit the Rainforest Discovery Centre, which is a great way to understand more about Borneo’s huge bio-diversity and endlessly fascinating wildlife.

Day 5 Today you will transfer by boat to the Abai Jungle Lodge. After a relaxing lunch, explore the jungle trails behind the lodge, which lead to a raised viewing platform where you can spot birds and other wildlife – previous visitors to the lodge have spotted a leopard and a Sun bear! In the afternoon, enjoy a wildlife-spotting cruise down the Kinabatangan River; the jungle on either side of the river is home to multiple primates, including orangutans and macaques. This evening you will experience the nocturnal jungle with an experienced guide at the trail.

Day 6 Enjoy a morning cruise to the Pitas Oxbow Lake where you have the chance to see more amazing wildlife including Proboscis monkeys and Bornean Pygmy elephants – the smallest elephants in Asia. The rest of the day is yours to spend at leisure – perhaps exploring more of the trails behind the lodge – before enjoying another evening river cruise.

Day 7 Enjoy a leisurely morning before cruising back to Sandakan. Enjoy lunch in the town before heading back to Kota Kinabalu.

Day 8 Today you have a day at leisure to explore Kota Kinabalu, one of Malaysia’s fastest growing cities. Explore the city centre or relax after a busy trip on a sandy beach.

Day 9 Transfer to the airport for your homebound flight.
