Twelve days of Brazil perfection is how you would describe our Bahian Jewels of Brazil holiday. A great choice for those who have already been charmed by the vibrant lights and Latin American spirit of Rio de Janerio and are eager to see a different side to this vast and diverse South American country. You will fly into Salvador for two days to explore the first colonial capital city of Brazil, a place rich with historical significance and an electric energy. The Villa Bahia, a restored 17th century mansion located in the heart of the city's historical centre, provides the perfect resting place for your Salvador discoveries.
From here you will take a six hour bus journey to the national park Chapada Diamantina. Whilst here you will stay at Pousada Canto das Aguas, a hotel built around the idyllic river which stretches into the streets of Lencois. Hiking boots are an absolute must for the two days spent exploring Chapada Diamantina, an area which was plundered for diamonds in the mid-19th century. While diamonds have not been spotted in this region for years, your adventures in this national park will be filled with gems such as swimming in the Enchanted Falls and cave snorkelling through the Poco Azul. Once you have returned to Salvador for an extra night you will travel along the 'Coconut Coast' to Praia do Forte for your idyllic four day beach escape Staying at the Tivoli Ecoresort, a stylish and eco-friendly resort, you will spend your days surrounded by spotless white-sand beaches, gorgeous tropical rainforest and the soothing sea breeze.
Day 1 Leave London for your flight to Salvador via Lisbon. Upon your arrival in the evening you will be taken by a private transfer to the Villa Bahia in the historic district of Pelourinho.
Day 2 After enjoying your hotel breakfast in the hotel step out to take in the city’s vibrant atmosphere. Highlights of the city include a cookery class, a Capoeria performance, which originates in Salvador, or visiting the lavishly decorated São Fransisco Church, filled with gold leaf and blue Portuguese tiles. Whilst wandering through the colourful colonial buildings be sure to stop off and enjoy all the delicious regional food available in the restaurants.
Day 4 Leave the city behind with an early morning bus taking you to Lencois, the ever changing landscape out of your window keeping you entertained from the comfort of your seat. Once you have arrived in Lencois, the gateway town to Chapada Diamantina, you will be guided to the hotel Pousada Canto das Aguas.
Day 5 Enjoy a pousada breakfast, fantastic and necessary substance for your day’s activities, in the bright dining area before setting off to explore the great outdoors and stunning natural beauty of Chapada Diamantina. Follow the 3.5 km trail, dotted with cactus and strawflower plants, to the Riberiaro do Meio waterfall to swim in the turquoise waters of the naturally formed pools.
Day 6 For breathtaking views of the mountains of Chapada Diamantina, a true showcase of the grand scale of the national park, trek up Pai Ignacio Hill to 1240m above sea level. Watching the mountains change colour as the sun sets is an incredibly special way to finish your time in this epically beautiful part of the world.
Day 7 After a leisurely morning around Lencois, you will take the afternoon bus service back to Salvador, returning to the Villa Bahia. How you spend your final Salvador evening is up to you, whether you return to your favourite local restaurant or enjoy a simple dinner in the hotel.
Day 8 Leave Salvador for your transfer north along the road know as the 'Coconut Highway' (because of the number of plantations) to the coastal town of Praia do Forte. A former fishing village it takes it's name from the castle built by a Portuguese settler, Garcia D'Avila. It is now a charming resort town, with many roads made of sand. Spend the new 4 nights at Tivoli Ecoresort set on a 12km stretch of beach. Relax on your balcony to the sounds of nature and views across the ocean.
Day 9 Hire bicycles and cycle the 40km of beach which makes up this beautiful coastline to find a secluded area of sand and sea. See the beauty under the water and try snorkelling. Or recline and relax on the white sandy beach, drink in hand after a visit to the luxury spa. The list of options of how to spend your peaceful beach days here goes on and on. The perfect finish to your Salvador and Chapada Diamantina adventure.
Day 12 Say a sad goodbye to beach life with a transfer to Ilheus airport to return to Salvador for your onwards flight to London via Lisbon.
