Ho Chi Minh City – Hue – Hoi An – Ha Long Bay – Hanoi – Luang Prabang – Siem Reap
Your trip begins in Ho Chi Minh City, also known by its old name Saigon, where you’ll have some time to explore the sights and sounds of this bustling modern city. A visit to the Chu Chi tunnels, key to the strategy of the Viet Cong during the war, makes for a humbling experience. This rounds off the Ho Chi Minh leg of the tour, and will see you heading towards the centre of the country, to the enchanting Imperial City of Hue, Vietnamese capital during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Perched on the banks of the Perfume River, it is now a UNESCO World Heritage site and home to a wealth of temples, tombs and pagodas.
A scenic drive over the Pass of Ocean Clouds will take you to Hoi An, one of Vietnam’s most picturesque spots, with a European feel that speaks of its French colonial past. You can take this opportunity to get your hands dirty with a cookery class, or learn how silk lanterns are made.
After this it’s back up north again, and time for a change of pace as well as direction. Ha Long Bay is a tranquil watery haven cut into the limestone peaks that shadow it. A boat trip down the bay is the perfect opportunity to unwind, reflect and bask in the breathtaking beauty of the area. Let the serene cruise recharge you before you make for the chaotic buzz of the northern capital city of Hanoi. You’ll be spoilt for choice in this busy hub of markets, museums, parks and charming backstreets to explore by foot, pushbike or scooter. Hanoi marks the final leg of your Vietnam journey, before moving€ross to the untouched beauty of tranquil Laos, the ‘land of a million elephants’.
Nestled in the mountains the city of Luang Prabang, the sixteenth century capital, remains Laos’ spiritual and religious centre. It exists in harmony with its surroundings, a treasure trove of Buddhist temples, shrines and traditional markets. The sight of the lit up Night Market being wended through by orange robed monks is one you won’t forget in a hurry. From here, you will fly to Siem Reap, Cambodia, where your journey ends with an exploration of the ancient temples of Angkor. Tap into an ancient civilisation as the surrounding jungle, studded with great stone carved temples, transports you to another world.
