Hanoi – Ha Long Bay – Hoi An – Ho Chi Minh City – Mekong Delta – Siem Reap – Phnom Penh
This fascinating two week journey encompasses the best of all that is historical, cultural and scenic in Vietnam and Cambodia, as you take in the neighbouring countries’ contrasts. Your tour begins in the northern Vietnamese capital of Hanoi, an urban hub and vibrant jumble of mismatched architecture. Soak up everything by foot or bike in this treasure trove of markets and museums, street food sellers and scooters.
From the bustle of Hanoi to the serenity of Ha Long, the next stop will be a cruise down the bay. Here you can expect breathtaking scenery and floating fishing villages to explore.
Moving further south, Hoi An provides yet more contrast. The ancient port town bears witness to the country’s colonial past with French architecture and fusion cuisine abounding. Take a leisurely wander through the streets, with their red brick and European feel, get measured up for an outfit by one of the town’s famed tailors, or hire a bike and get out into the surrounding countryside.
From Hoi An, a short flight will take you to Ho Chi Minh City. This is the place for those who crave the faster pace and excitement of the big city. Still known by most of its inhabitants as Saigon, it is the heart of modern Vietnam, and offers everything from huge markets and manic streets packed with motor bikes, to the quiet grandeur and historical interest of the former Presidential Palace.
Further south still, the tropical world of the Mekong Delta provides a chance to relax and meditate on your trip so far, as you drift down the palm-fringed waters, past rice paddies and tiny villages. After floating markets and lodge€commodation in the heart of the delta, it’s time to bid farewell to Vietnam. A short flight will take you over the border into Cambodia’s Siem Reap.
Prepare to enter another world as you embark upon your exploration of the ancient city of Angkor Tom, whose stone gates are majestically carved with elephants and giant faces. In the lush strange jungles, embedded with carved stone temples, you can€cess your inner Tomb Raider and get a taste of the ancient culture that still resonates through the local community.
After a leisurely afternoon in Siem Reap, finish your journey in Cambodia’s modern capital city of Phnom Penh, known as the ‘Pearl of the Orient’ for the beauty of its situation at the confluence of the two mighty rivers, the Mekong and the TonlÉ Sap.
