Mandalay - Bagan - Inle - Yangon
Our Best of Burma itinerary explores the country's most celebrated destinations in a fun, fast-paced introduction to Burma's friendly people, fascinating history and glorious scenery.
The journey commences in the former capital of Mandalay, readily accessible by daily direct flight from nearby Bangkok. This is modern Burma's second city, located in the heart of the country on the banks of the mighty Irrawaddy (Ayeyarwady) River. The last Burmese king, Thibaw, was exiled from Mandalay in 1885 following the Third Anglo-Burmese War, and it is the remnants of his Konbaung Dynasty, and the preceding dynasties based in the vicinity, that make this a fantastic introduction to Burma.
A short flight takes you to one of Asia's most iconic destinations, the plains of Bagan, scattered with with over 3,000 individual pagodas and temples dating from the 11th to 13th century. After the cultural and historic glories of Mandalay and Bagan, your next stop provides a marvellous counterpoint. Flying east to Heho, we head to the scenic highlight of the tour, the beautiful mountain-ringed Inle Lake. Famed for its unique leg-rowing fisherman and floating farms, Inle is inhabited by numerous minority people living on or around the lake shore.
The tour concludes in leafy Yangon, Burma's capital until 2005, but still its economic and diplomatic heart. Join the locals for a spiritual sunset at the spectacular Shwedagon pagoda, the human and sacred heart of the Burmese people.
