Meandering to Monasteries
A short drive takes us to Asprokavos, Corfu's southernmost tip and the start of our trail. In our first week the trail takes us via Arkoudillas Monastery to Spartera and along a golden beach to Lake Korission. From Paramonas we hike to the hamlet of Pelekas, and on to the coastal village of Liapades; here we can rest for a day and perhaps take a boat to nearby sea-caves. On each day we encounter the island's traditional lifestyle as we wend our way along ancient footpaths through shadowed olive groves and across hillsides scented with wild flowers.
Head to the North of the Island
Next we criss-cross the island heading west and cross the boundless. High above the north-east coast, Albania comes into view across the straits. Kalami is our base here, a pretty seaside village favoured by Lawrence Durrell during his time on the island. Our final and most challenging hike takes us via the abandoned Byzantine village of Old Perithia, down to Corfu's northernmost point at Cape Agia Ekaterini at Agios Spiridon.
Meeting the real Greece
The trip is designed to encounter local people and tries to stay away from tourist towns. We explore ancient villages framed by vineyards and travel along dramatic coastal scenery and shady groves of olive and cypress. Lagoons, golden beaches and whitewashed monasteries are but some of the highlights of this wonderful adventure.
