Nazca Lines & Arequipa
From Lima we head south through the desert to the town of Nazca where we can view the mysterious Nazca Lines. These huge geometrical patterns cut into the stony desert floor have been a source of wonderment to travellers for centuries. Taking the overnight bus to Arequipa we journey up into the high Andes. Conical volcanic peaks, shimmering lakes and herds of alpaca create an other-worldly atmosphere. From here there's the option to head out to Colca Canyon, famous for the mighty Condor that glides on the thermals created above the precipitous drops.
Uros Islands & Lake Titicaca
Journeying on, we arrive on the shores of Lake Titicaca, the world's highest navigable lake. Jumping aboard our boat we head first for the amazing floating reed islands at Uros, before continuing to the enchanting Taquile Island. Here we spend the night as guests of a local family in their simple hostal which must boast some of the most impressive views anywhere. Sailing back to the mainland, we continue by bus (or train, optional, see below) across the altiplano high plain to Cusco, the ancient Inca capital.
Discover Machu Picchu
After soaking up the laid-back atmosphere of Cusco's wide plazas and narrow cobbled streets, we board the train that takes us to Aguas Calientes at the foot of Machu Picchu. After a guided tour of the site we explore more of this lofty mountain citadel before returning to Aguas Calientes where there's the chance to unwind in the town's thermal springs. Returning back to Cusco by train our final day is free to try white rafting (optional) on the mighty Urubamba River and have a final night out on the town.
Flying to Puerto Maldonado, we can explore the Amazon jungle by dugout canoe and also on foot for close-up views of exotic tropical flora. There's plenty of time to relax and soak up the atmosphere.
